Deadpool & Wolverine Concept Art Reveals Rob Liefeld Inspired Variant

As a gamer with over two decades of comic book-inspired video game adventures under my belt, I must admit that the latest news about Deadpool & Wolverine has me utterly thrilled! The nod to Rob Liefeld‘s iconic style in this movie is like a dream come true for many fans who grew up on his artwork.

In the movie, Deadpool and Wolverine pay tribute to comic book legend Rob Liefeld in a humorous way by naming a shoe store after him, poking fun at a popular meme that jokes about his difficulty in drawing feet. Interestingly, another version of Deadpool, inspired by Liefeld’s signature costume with numerous pouches, almost made an appearance in the scene. On Tuesday, Marvel Studios visual development head Andy Park revealed concept art featuring a Deadpool character entirely covered in pouches, a nod to Liefeld’s iconic pouch-filled costumes.

“Rob-Pool: A Tribute to My First Boss – Rob Liefeld! During the early stages of Deadpool & Wolverine’s film, I experimented with unique twists on Deadpool’s costume for an exciting scene,” Park explained on Instagram. “I felt compelled to design these variations incorporating Liefeld-inspired elements such as oversized muscles, pouches, swords, shoulder pads, original color patterns, and distinctive eye shapes. It was an enjoyable experience! Thank you, Rob!”

During our conversation with Liefeld at San Diego Comic-Con, the comic creator expressed that he was completely unphased by the outstanding box office success of the third installment.

Liefeld commented, “I had a feeling it would include a ‘2’ when I was informed that Deadpool & Wolverine had already earned $200 million on their opening day. I’ve been insisting to everyone that it can surpass this figure. The rating is less of a concern nowadays… Today’s youth aren’t confined by PG-13 and R ratings… The content they consume online is far more complex, so let’s move past our current rating and break new ground.”

He also mentioned that it’s a pleasure to associate with such big-name movies which have made it to the list of top ten highest opening weekends. They truly earned this recognition.
