Deadpool & Wolverine Considered Having Mephisto as Its Major Villain

As a die-hard Marvel fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment every time we miss out on seeing one of my favorite villains on the big screen. And Mephisto, the devilish trickster from the comics, is definitely one of them. I still remember the excitement that rippled through the Marvel community when rumors swirled about Mephisto making an appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The anticipation was palpable as we watched “WandaVision,” hoping against hope that the big bad would be none other than the elusive Mephisto. Alas, it was not to be, and instead, we got Agatha Harkness.

Marvel enthusiasts came very close to witnessing Mephisto on the silver screen in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The comic book devil, a long-standing character within the Marvel Universe, gained significant attention during “WandaVision,” with many fans hypothesizing that he was concealed as the villain. However, it was ultimately revealed to be Agatha Harkness, who now leads her own spin-off series. Initially intended for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Mephisto seemed like a strong contender to oppose the reunion of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Nonetheless, it seems that the creative team opted for Charles Xavier’s twin sister Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin) instead. Previously, there were serious considerations for Mephisto to be the primary antagonist in the project.

During an interview with Collider, filmmaker Shawn Levy (Director of Deadpool and Wolverine) and stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman were questioned about adding a villain they hadn’t previously included in the film. Levy pondered aloud, “Which baddie almost made the cut?” To which Reynolds replied, “Mephisto.”

Levy went on, “That’s the one. Our tale underwent numerous close-but-not-quite variations before reaching this point. To be honest, it was Hugh’s controversial phone call that initially shaped the narrative. Yet, the intriguing sibling relationship between Cassandra Nova and Charles, due to Cassandra’s connection to Professor X, added a captivating layer for you [addressing Jackman].”

A recent buzz in gossip circles suggests that Sacha Baron Cohen could portray the character of Mephisto in the upcoming “Ironheart” Disney+ series, set to debut in 2025.

Ryan Reynolds settles Taylor Swift speculation for Deadpool & Wolverine

Despite previous reports stating that Taylor Swift wouldn’t make a secret appearance in the film, Ryan Reynolds felt compelled to put an end to the rumors. He clarified to E! News, “I want to set the record straight: the cameo involving Taylor… since she’s our friend – this isn’t part of the movie.”

Reynolds strongly believed that Taylor Swift should be given more than just a cameo in “Deadpool 3”; instead, she deserved the entire franchise. He went on to express, “I’ve always said that if anyone were to replace me as Deadpool, Taylor would be an excellent choice. Her humor is a hidden talent that not many get to see.”
