As a seasoned gamer and avid fan of the superhero genre, I’m thrilled to hear about the making of “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Shawn Levy’s words resonate with me as someone who has grown up loving the self-deprecating humor and irreverent tone of Deadpool. The freedom to comment on anything and everything in the MCU and beyond is what sets these movies apart, and it’s a blast to watch.
Shawn Levy, the director of “Deadpool” and its sequel, shared with The Financial Times what he found most enjoyable during the filming process. Despite the popularity of the slight gore and profanity in the “Deadpool” series, Levy expressed that the self-awareness element was the most entertaining part. With rumors swirling about Disney potentially altering the tone to fit their brand, early fan reactions have debunked this theory. Regardless, the irreverent style remains a defining characteristic of these movies, allowing them to mock the Marvel Cinematic Universe and other superhero franchises. This freedom sets “Deadpool” apart from other superhero films.
When people consider the R-rating, profanity, and bold violence in making a film like “Deadpool,” Levy reflects, there’s something even more enjoyable. He explains, “The true delight comes from Deadpool’s self-awareness. He interacts directly with the audience, commenting on society, Hollywood, and the movie itself. This creates hilarious opportunities to make fun of everything.”
“The exploration of male camaraderie is a significant aspect of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘ — delving into how mature men form relationships, convey messages. Occasionally, if the men in question are Deadpool and Wolverine, this bonding process involves stabbing each other.”
Deadpool & Wolverine Ended Up Hinging On Hugh Jackman
For some time now, the production of Deadpool 3 has been a work in progress. Initially, Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy struggled to develop a compelling storyline. However, their fortunes changed when Hugh Jackman expressed interest in reprising his role as Wolverine. This pivotal decision breathed new life into the project, leading to a cohesive storyline.
Six years ago, I had a meeting with Kevin Feige to propose the idea of bringing Wolverine and Deadpool together on screen. My first words to him were, “I really want to make a movie featuring these two characters.” At that point, he responded, “It’s not going to happen.” I accepted his decision, but Shawn and I continued brainstorming various pitches and ideas, hoping to persuade Marvel. However, none of our proposals gained traction.
One day, as we neared the end of our presentation to Kevin Feige, we were contemplating stepping away and regrouping for a few years before returning with a clearer vision. Suddenly, my phone rang – it was Hugh calling me. Intrigued, Shawn and I shifted gears mid-pitch and asked Kevin, “What do you think about this unexpected turn of events? Hugh just called me.” To our surprise, Kevin responded positively right away.
