Deadpool & Wolverine Director Says Hugh Jackman Approved Film’s Riskiest Joke

As a longtime fan of both Deadpool and Wolverine, I must say that the chemistry between these two characters in “Deadpool & Wolverine” is nothing short of electrifying. The way Ryan Reynolds seamlessly weaves humor into even the most sensitive topics, such as Hugh Jackman‘s personal life, is a testament to his incredible talent.

It’s not surprising that Deadpool is a jester, but in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” he took his humor to another level, making jokes not only about Disney characters but also poking fun at the actors’ personal lives. To achieve this, everything had to be approved before filming, but it’s amazing how Ryan Reynolds incorporated Hugh Jackman’s divorce into the movie. This was discussed on Variety’s Directors on Directors program, where the movie’s director, Shawn Levy, spoke with Jon M. Chu, who is directing “Wicked.” The reference to Jackman’s divorce arises during one of Deadpool’s many instances of breaking the fourth wall. Although there’s no explicit context provided, it can be inferred since Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness announced their separation last year after 27 years of marriage.

During a certain part of their discussion, Chu inquired about the scene involving the protagonist’s joke that Wolverine would be less frequently shirtless on screen due to the divorce. Levy disclosed that on the very first day of filming, Jackman attempted to talk directly to the camera, but Reynolds swiftly pointed out that only Deadpool does that, and the rule is for other characters not to acknowledge it. “We make a joke about this being Logan, who usually goes without a shirt, but has let himself go after the divorce,” Levy explains. “Deadpool is known for his witty humor, but we made sure Hugh was okay with the jest before we presented it to the crew and the public.

Jackman shared that the Deadpool films were what caused him to reconsider retiring as Logan. He fondly remembered the time when he discovered he would be playing his Marvel character again. It appears that a lighthearted jest about his private life didn’t dissuade him in any way.

In the same vein of humor, Jennifer Garner, a fellow cast member with Jackman, found herself on the receiving end. While her quip was scripted, unlike Jackman’s off-the-cuff remark, she gave the green light when her character Daredevil, portrayed by her former spouse Ben Affleck, came up in the production.

Levy mentioned earlier that it’s important to inform the actors ahead of time, especially when things deviate slightly from the script like with Reynolds. “It was all done with a playful intention that everyone enjoyed. Those lines wouldn’t have made it into the film if Hugh and Jen didn’t find them amusing,” he explained.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but point out that Deadpool and Wolverine didn’t pass up an opportunity to incorporate some witty fourth-wall-breaking jokes in this movie. They even managed to slip in references to their home countries – Australia and Canada. And let’s not forget about Blake Lively, who graced our screens as Ladypool. Even she wasn’t spared from the hilarity!
