As a seasoned gamer with decades of comic book-inspired video games under my belt, I must say that Henry Cavill’s surprise appearance as a Wolverine variant in Deadpool & Wolverine has left me utterly thrilled! The witty banter between these two iconic characters was a delight to witness, and the nod to Cavill’s complex history with Warner Bros. Discovery was a nice touch that had me chuckling.
In an unexpected turn, Henry Cavill, who previously played Superman, has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans were taken aback when Cavill appeared as a Wolverine equivalent in the film “Deadpool & Wolverine”, surprising Ryan Reynolds’s character, Wade Wilson, during his pursuit of a Weapon X to return to the Time Variance Authority. Deadpool directly addressed Cavill, calling him “The Cavillrine”, hinting that he would treat him better than the people at Warner Bros. Discovery, alluding to Cavill’s tumultuous past with the studio as their Man of Steel. It remains unclear whether this was a single cameo or the beginning of a more extensive role for Cavill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Henry Cavill Breaks Silence on Deadpool & Wolverine Cameo
Man of Steel? Man of Adamantium.
As a gamer, I hopped onto Instagram today and finally spilled the beans about that Deadpool & Wolverine cameo I’ve been keeping under wraps. I shared a sneak peek of my Wolverine character, a unique variant you won’t want to miss! Oh, and let’s just say I took a subtle jab at DC while I was at it. Can’t wait for everyone to see it! #Wolverine #Cameo #ComicBookMashup
“To be safe, I shaved the moustache off for this one. Just the moustache,” Cavill wrote.
Before making his intricate guest appearance as Superman in the Black Adam post-credits sequence, Henry Cavill’s last extensive theatrical outing as Superman was in Justice League (2017). During the production of this movie, there were considerable reshoots that coincided with the filming of Mission: Impossible – Fallout. In this latter film, Cavill was contractually bound to grow a mustache for his role. Consequently, he couldn’t shave off the mustache during Justice League reshoots. To address this issue, Warner Bros. had to digitally erase the mustache in post-production.
In a recent interview, the director of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Shawn Levy, stated that when discussing this character, they should use the name given to him by Ryan Reynolds, nicknamed “The Cavillrine.” Ryan himself embraced this term quickly as he recognized its subversive and playful nature. It also shows affection for his work and sets a new legacy for him as he transitions from a DC hero to a Marvel hero in his current role.
On the initial day of filming, Ryan Reynolds expressed his thoughts about the challenge of casting a new actor for Wolverine, stating, “Who on earth would you cast? It’s an impossible and frustrating role to recast.” He went on to say that as an actor, taking on such a well-established character like Wolverine would be intimidating. However, if the original actor wasn’t available, Henry Cavill could do a decent job.
Deadpool & Wolverine is in theaters now.
