Deadpool & Wolverine: Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine Return, Explained

Deadpool & Wolverine: Hugh Jackman's Wolverine Return, Explained

As a long-time fan of the X-Men franchise and a devoted viewer of all things Wolverine, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Two years ago, when Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman announced their collaboration on the third Deadpool movie, I, like many others, wondered how they would continue the storyline after the emotional and satisfying ending of “Logan.” With Logan’s tragic and permanent death in that film, fans were concerned about potential damage to his legacy.

For two years, fans have eagerly anticipated the third Deadpool movie featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Following the emotional and satisfying send-off of Jackman’s Wolverine in “Logan” (2017), where he tragically died, fans were concerned about how this new film would address the events of that film without tarnishing its legacy. In the new movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, Jackman’s return is skillfully integrated while also allowing the iconic character to peacefully depart from the storyline. While there are some light-hearted references to “Logan,” the film sensitively handles this delicate balance. (Note: The following contains a few plot points in Deadpool & Wolverine but does not reveal any major surprises or deaths.)

In the opening scene of Deadpool & Wolverine, I find myself playing the role of Deadpool as I unearth Logan’s lifeless body. Disappointment sets in as I realize that my friend and adversary is actually gone. But being the resourceful mercenary that I am, I decide to make use of Logan’s adamantium-infused bones as deadly weapons, taking down members of the TVA with ease. Some may find this disturbing, but most will surely appreciate the dark humor. With the previous version of Wolverine now deceased, it falls upon me to journey through different universes in search of a living Wolverine who can aid me in my mission to save my own reality.

Deadpool encounters various iterations of Wolverine, revealing unexpected twists. In the end, he comes across the named Wolverine, who is disheartened by his past errors and unlike the hero we’re accustomed to. Instead, this Wolverine betrayed his X-Men team severely. Given his self-perception as a failure, he’s easily provoked and clearly unimpressed by Deadpool’s shenanigans.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but form an emotional connection with this fresh take on Wolverine, despite its distinct backstory from the one we saw in “Logan.” Hugh Jackman might have given us a grittier and more raw interpretation of the character, but he’s consistently managed to bring Wolverine to life in a way that leaves me feeling fulfilled.

Why Does Deadpool & Wolverine‘s Logan Wear the Classic Suit?

Previously, it was revealed that Jackman would don the iconic yellow Wolverine costume from the comics. Fans have eagerly anticipated this moment for almost 25 years. The explanation behind Jackman’s new look in the film adds an extra layer of depth. Throughout the movie, Deadpool persistently probes Wolverine about his constant wearing of the suit, and the motivation behind it is quite poignant. Spoiler Alert: The following information may reveal details of the plot!

Toward the end of the movie, it is disclosed that Logan had always been reluctant to join X-Men and don the uniform, despite the insistence of Scott, Jean, and others. Sadly, they all perished, leaving Logan filled with regret for not being able to save them. Now, he puts on the suit as a poignant reminder of his fallen comrades.

Due to encounters with a few individuals, including Deadpool and Wolverine, the film’s portrayal of Logan undergoes significant development and growth. This transformation leaves audiences with an affinity for him that rivals our feelings towards the earlier version of Wolverine.
