Deadpool & Wolverine Officially Wins Second Weekend at the Box Office, Trap Comes in Third

As a die-hard Marvel fan with decades of comic book reading under my belt, I must say that the latest Deadpool & Wolverine film has truly knocked it out of the park! The sheer box office success of this R-rated superhero flick is nothing short of spectacular, and it’s a testament to the enduring appeal of these iconic characters.

Over the past weekend, the third installment of Deadpool and Wolverine graced movie theaters, delivering a powerful debut for Marvel Studios. Not only did this film boast the largest opening weekend since Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), but it also ranked among the top ten highest opening weekends ever, earning an impressive $483.3 million globally. In its second week, Deadpool and Wolverine retained their position atop the box office charts, pushing their worldwide total to a staggering $824 million.

In a remarkable turn of events this week, Deadpool and Wolverine dominated the box office, setting records as the highest grossing R-rated films on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Not only that, but they surpassed the entire lifetime earnings of Logan. During its second weekend, it garnered an impressive $97 million in North America, boosting its domestic total to a staggering $395.6 million. This impressive second weekend performance ranks as the eighth-best of all time and fifth for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film.

Speaking about international earnings for the film, it added another $110.5 million to its total. As per The Hollywood Reporter, Deadpool and Wolverine are predicted to surpass the $1 billion mark in just a few days. If they do, they’ll soon dethrone Joker as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. Joker took that title from the original Deadpool in 2019.

During its third weekend at the box office, Twisters finished as runner-up, accumulating an additional $22.7 million for a domestic grand total of $195.6 million. In third position during this same weekend was Trap, a new M. Night Shyamalan thriller starring Josh Hartnett. The movie saw a promising preview night on Thursday and ended the weekend with a domestic earnings of $15.6 million, meeting Warner Bros.’ expectations.

In this past weekend, Despicable Me 4 finished in fourth position, boosting its domestic earnings to an impressive $300 million and its global earnings to a staggering $752.2 million. On the other hand, Inside Out 2 claimed the fifth spot, pushing its total earnings to a whopping $1.55 billion. Just earlier this week, it achieved a remarkable feat by breaking into the elite top ten-grossing films list with its highest milestone yet.

Ultimately, Sony’s movie titled “Harold and the Purple Crayon” debuted over the weekend, landing at the sixth spot with earnings of only $6 million.

M. Night Shyamalan Talks Competing in Crowded Summer Movie Season:

Deadpool & Wolverine Officially Wins Second Weekend at the Box Office, Trap Comes in Third

Discussing the fact that Trap debuted on Deadpool & Wolverine’s second weekend, we had a chat with M. Night Shyamalan regarding competing with major films at the box office, as reported by ComicBook.

As a movie enthusiast, I find myself pondering over the question of how to make a film stand out in a sea of releases. M. Night Shyamalan, the creative mind behind these original movies, puts it this way: “These are ‘Rare Birds.’ So, when trying to grab your attention amidst all the number twos and threes, and titles you’ve heard before, it becomes quite a challenge.” In 2024, everyone is vying for our attention, making it much easier to follow the crowd. But Shyamalan’s unique approach sets these films apart, making them truly special.

In simpler terms, the director explained, “Imagine a nurse who works tirelessly and desires to watch a movie. She comes across my trailer, finds it intriguing but might struggle to recall it after three weeks. This is the predicament of original movies. They’re more forgettable compared to something like ‘Deadpool 3’. People are more likely to remember that. So, this is our challenge – making original films. I hope there’s always a market for them.”
