As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with decades under my belt, I must say that the recent revelation of Babypool in Deadpool & Wolverine has left me utterly thrilled! Growing up, I was always the kid poring over every single Deadpool Corps comic I could lay my hands on. To see these wild misfits finally come to life on the big screen is nothing short of a dream come true.
Actor Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool and Wolverine in the movies, recently unveiled a new version of Babypool. Jonay Bacallado, a Marvel Studios concept artist, created this smallest variant’s design for the film. Although Babypool will only appear briefly, it seems that Reynolds can’t hide his enthusiasm to see such an unusual character make a screen appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. On social media, Reynolds shared the initial design as well as a screenshot of the character from the movie itself. In recent weeks, Reynolds has been celebrating the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine, which is now the highest-grossing R-rated film ever made (surpassing Joker to reach that milestone).
Last week, over at The Official Marvel Podcast, director Shawn Levy shared exciting plans for the Deadpool Corps’ appearance. As I delved deeper into writing the movie script alongside Ryan Reynolds, I stumbled upon the concept and found myself captivated by the idea of bringing this motley crew to life on-screen.
“Initially, when working with Ryan on the film, I devoured at least 100 comic issues. To be honest, I wasn’t fully versed or fluent in Deadpool Corps lore – it was one of the initial comics I requested in a flood from Marvel. However, once I encountered the Corps, I realized that if we could create a narrative reason to incorporate various Deadpool characters into the movie, it would add an intriguing twist in the final act. And that’s exactly what we did, drawing inspiration directly from the comics.”
Ryan Reynolds Is Feeling The Love
It might seem that Ryan Reynolds would be incredibly pleased with the success of Deadpool & Wolverine. However, there’s one specific moment from the film that makes him even prouder than all the rest. On social media, Reynolds shared that overhearing some workers at Marvel Studios referring to the sling ring portal as a “Marvel Sparkle Circle” is a professional achievement he will always remember.
At one time, Deadpool referred to the portal as the ‘Marvel Glitter Ring.’ This was because during scripting, I wasn’t aware of its official name, as Ryan Reynolds clarified on Twitter. It turns out that this is a term that Marvel staff also use, making it seem like it’s an official title. Despite its humor, I consider this my most significant accomplishment in the whole process.
