As a seasoned gamer and Marvel enthusiast with a soft spot for quirky humor, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment that Rob McElhenney’s cameo didn’t make it into the final cut of Deadpool & Wolverine. Having followed his career since It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, I’ve come to appreciate his talent for delivering both heartfelt performances and side-splitting jokes.
In late July, the action-packed duo of Deadpool and Wolverine graced the silver screen, and it has since become one of this year’s biggest blockbusters as well as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever. Note: Spoilers lie ahead! The film boasted a number of unexpected appearances, including Chris Evans as Johnny Storm and Henry Cavill as a variant of Wolverine, along with a group of cherished heroes in The Void. However, one familiar face was conspicuously absent from the new movie – Rob McElhenney, best known for “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Despite being friends with Ryan Reynolds and co-owning a football club together, McElhenney’s cameo did not make it into the final cut. Recently, Reynolds shared on Instagram an homage to his friend and revealed why that scene didn’t make it into the movie.
As a seasoned filmmaker and actor, I’ve learned that sometimes the most difficult decisions are those involving our “darlings” – the cherished scenes, lines, or performances that we hold dear but may not serve the overall vision of a project. In my career, I’ve had to make such tough calls, and it never gets easier. Recently, my friend and fellow artist Rob McElhenney had the kindness to appear in a cameo for #DeadpoolAndWolverine, a role that unfortunately had to be cut during post-production. It was a bittersweet moment as I watched this scene – filled with laughter, camaraderie, and creative energy – fade away, knowing it may never see the light of day. However, I take solace in the knowledge that even though it’s not part of the final cut, Rob’s cameo lives on in our hearts and memories as a testament to our friendship and shared passion for storytelling. To Rob, thank you for your generosity and creativity; I look forward to seeing what amazing things we will create together in the future.
He went on to say that the sequence didn’t function as we initially designed it. Rob was the sole factor keeping it in place for as long as it did, due to his evidently deep well of talent, sharp writing skills, and an aura of confidence that comes from creating successful TV shows. As for Wrexham, I wouldn’t have discovered a passion like my affection for @wrexham_afc if it weren’t for Rob McElhenney.
In a nutshell, Reynolds said, “I truly enjoyed creating this film, yet it wasn’t without its challenges.” He continued, “The pressure was immense – I’d say the toughest villain in cinema is ‘Expectation.’ But having friends around during stressful times makes all the difference. Although I regret that Rob had to travel from afar for a scene that didn’t materialize, I appreciate his presence on set. When Rob is near, my heart calms, and my body stops panicking. He’s always there for others. And he was there for me, even in moments when Rob begged for mercy before Alioth snatched him up, only to be consumed and transformed into Alioth-poo. Farewell, TVA Soldier.”
Hey there! I just had an idea – I’d totally rock as Hydra Bob, if Marvel Studios ever considered it! 😜 #MarvelStudios
