Deadpool & Wolverine Scrapped Avengers Reunion Plans

Deadpool & Wolverine Scrapped Avengers Reunion Plans

As a lifelong Marvel fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia and disappointment at the news that the planned Avengers reunion for Deadpool & Wolverine never came to fruition. The prospect of seeing Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Hawkeye, Hulk, and our favorite merc with a mouth all back together was almost too good to be true.

The duo comprising Deadpool and Wolverine envisioned assembling the Avengers once more, but unfortunately, these plans were abandoned during the early stages of production. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the movie’s writers, discussed their ambition to bring together the original six (Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Hawkeye, and Hulk) with IndieWire. While it might have seemed like a pipedream, they were determined to give it a shot. The challenge lay in coordinating schedules for actors like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, and Chris Hemsworth, which ultimately proved difficult. Nonetheless, one can only imagine the excitement if this reunion had taken place!

In the thrilling instant at Avengers Tower, I was expecting to see the original lineup. But here’s a fun behind-the-scenes tidbit: early drafts of that scene had all Avengers gathered together, can you believe it? However, poor ol’ Deadpool didn’t make the cut and, well, he let them have it in his unique way!

So Much Iron Man

The two authors have much more to express. Bringing Iron Man back into the story would have been a thrilling sight. Unfortunately, Reese and Wernick weren’t aware that Downey Jr. was set to reprise his role as Doctor Doom soon after this movie’s release, which would have added complexity. Reese shared with the media, “Ryan Reynolds read the scene with both of them in the hope we could secure Downey. However, he also wanted Favreau because they work well together and they were all part of the same scene.”

In private, we had no clue about Doctor Doom’s involvement. It seemed unlikely he would take on two roles at once. Then, we thought, ‘Surely Downey wouldn’t turn down Ryan Reynolds, would he? After all, no one refuses Ryan Reynolds.’ Wernick pondered this. Ryan put the pressure on, and we wrote scenes for Downey to read. However, what we didn’t realize was that Doctor Doom was part of the secret plot.

In a different part of the interview, Reese shared insights about a scene involving Deadpool and Wolverine at Avengers Tower. The writer described it as similar to what was portrayed, but with Deadpool turning down Wade. He simply stated he wasn’t a team player and questioned his abilities as such. Essentially, it was very much like the scene you’ve seen, just featuring two characters instead of one. Jon Favreau was linked to this concept from the beginning, and it turned out well. Although we would have liked Robert Downey Jr., it seemed Marvel had a secret weapon – he was about to appear in another role. Given that Doctor Doom was coming up next, having him play Tony Stark didn’t fit logically.
