Deadpool & Wolverine Script Reveals Surprising Stranger Things Connection

As a cinephile with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the connection between Marvel and Stranger Things, as revealed by Shawn Levy, is nothing short of fascinating! The fact that Deadpool and Wolverine were scripted to share names with Stranger Things characters in the 2024 blockbuster movie is a testament to the intertwined nature of these universes.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’ve noticed an intriguing link between Marvel movies and Stranger Things, particularly in relation to Deadpool and Wolverine. According to director Shawn Levy, the characters from Marvel films were subtly linked to those in Stranger Things, primarily through their names, in the script. To preserve the element of surprise and prevent spoilers, even the actor’s big-name aliases were kept under wraps, even in the script. Instead of Elektra, Blade, Johnny Storm, and Henry Cavill’s Wolverine variant, they were referred to as Eleven, Billy, Jonathan, and Hopper respectively. For Levy, who is also an executive producer on Stranger Things, this crossover was a fascinating blend of two distinct worlds.

“True. For a brief while, my worlds collided,” Levy wrote on X.

Keeping quiet about those cameo appearances was a matter of concern, even for actor Ryan Reynolds, known for his roles as Deadpool and Wolverine. Previously, Reynolds confessed that he had worries something might go awry, particularly when the script was finalized and filming started.

He expressed that he was extremely anxious because he might be seen with Wesley Snipes, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Garner, and Dafne Keen. To be honest, this concern disturbed his sleep.

I, too, unveiled that we took significant measures to ensure drone footage was evaded, effectively securing the entire filming location.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’d always be on the lookout for anything unusual during our outdoor movie nights. If anyone spotted a drone overhead, I would quickly alert everyone and we’d all scatter for safety – thankfully, that situation never arose. However, the mere thought of a drone crashing into our gathering was always a source of anxiety for me.

It’s not too surprising that Levy and Reynolds would take additional precautions to keep spoilers under wraps, considering the history of leaks in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially prior to Spider-Man: No Way Home. Just like how Deadpool & Wolverine was such a hit in 2024, keeping major cameos secret until viewers sat in the theater was a big part of its appeal for fans.

There Was A Plan For A “Bad Fake Movie” To Keep Deadpool & Wolverine Under Wraps

It’s interesting to note that aside from name swaps, other strategies were employed to maintain secrecy about cameos. During an interview on Hot Ones, Reynolds disclosed that there was a concept for a movie titled “Alpha Cop.” In this film, two individuals would share one mind, resulting in the ultimate cop duo. He added that mock posters for the movie had already been designed to mask the actual project and generate excitement simultaneously.

Originally, the plan was for it to be quite unsettling. Imagine only ten people in America watching this movie during its premiere, and just five minutes into the film, the Marvel emblem would suddenly change and what would appear instead would be a joint appearance by Deadpool and Wolverine, as Ryan Reynolds explained.

In the end, their attempts to maintain secrecy proved successful, since the combined box office earnings of the Deadpool and Logan movies were surpassed by the performances of Deadpool & Wolverine.

Deadpool & Wolverine is available for streaming on Disney+.
