Deadpool & Wolverine: Shawn Levy Talks Cameos and Legacy

As a fan who’s been following these characters since their inception, the cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine were nothing short of a dream come true! Seeing Blade, Electra, X-23, and Gambit on the big screen was like revisiting old friends. The atmosphere on set was electric; it felt like a massive Marvel reunion!

Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool & Wolverine, discusses how they chose which cameos to feature in the movie. With the film now playing in cinemas for a few weeks, it’s time to reveal some spoilers. In an interview with The Official Marvel Podcast, Levy discussed the MCU project and their emphasis on legacy when it came to the cameos. Gathering Channing Tatum, Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Garner, and Dafne Keen together was quite a feat. However, these characters shared a unique trait: they never received a proper ending. Deadpool & Wolverine provided them with a fitting farewell (if indeed this is the final appearance of the ‘Anarchy Avengers’…). You can listen to what else Levy had to share by clicking below.

On set, there was a lively, festive atmosphere. To incorporate the theme of ‘legacy,’ we brainstormed characters who didn’t quite finish their stories. As these characters came together (like X-23, Blade, Gambit, and Electra), there was an overwhelming sense of joy and gratitude among everyone involved.

Speaking of Channing Tatum, who’s been eager to play Gambit for over a decade, it’s finally happening! The atmosphere on set was filled with gratitude and joy. We managed to complete the work efficiently while having a blast. Yet, there was an undeniable sense of awe, as if we were all blessed to be part of this incredible project. A feeling I’ll cherish forever.

Getting These Cameos Was Easy

As a gaming enthusiast diving into the world of cameos, let me share some exciting insights! Recently, director Shawn Levy dished out some juicy details to Variety. Here’s what I picked up: He and Ryan Reynolds managed to get in touch with most of these talented actors before their agents even knew a thing. To top it off, the majority of them agreed to join the project without needing much persuasion about the storyline. It’s clear that the allure of revisiting characters like Blade, Electra, X-23, and Gambit played a significant role in pushing Deadpool & Wolverine past the 1 billion-dollar mark at the box office.

In most cases, it was either Ryan or myself who directly contacted the actors for the unexpected roles in this film, long before lawyers and agents were brought into the picture, as director Shawn Levy explained to Variety. Essentially, we’d make the ask, and more often than not, the response would be a positive one.

Levy stated, “The term ‘Cavillrine,’ which Ryan created, immediately struck me as indisputable. Ryan agreed promptly because he recognized it would be both rebellious and whimsical. It was also a nod filled with affection for him and his work, as well as a playful exploration of his legacy as a DC hero transitioning into a Marvel character.”
