Deadpool & Wolverine Spoilers: X-Men's James McAvoy Explains Why He Didn't Cameo as Professor X

As a long-time fan of the X-Men universe and having followed the saga of Professor Xavier portrayed by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy, I have to admit that seeing Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine was an unexpected but welcome surprise. However, the absence of both McAvoy and Stewart from this latest Marvel Studios production felt like a missed opportunity.

Heads up: This piece discloses plot points about Deadpool and Wolverine. In 2016’s Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds’ character Wade Wilson jokingly asked “McAvoy or Stewart,” alluding to James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart from the X-Men film series. However, in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring Hugh Jackman as a multiverse Wolverine variant, Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova – Charles Xavier’s wicked twin sister, and numerous Fox-verse cameos, neither McAvoy nor Stewart were involved.

1. In 2018, McAvoy’s younger X-Men character had a brief appearance in Deadpool 2, while a character resembling Stewart’s Xavier showed up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022, belonging to the Illuminati and sporting the yellow hover chair and X-Men: The Animated Series theme. Contrary to earlier speculations about his role in Deadpool 3, both Xaviers were featured only in credit scenes that served as a tribute to the Fox-produced Marvel films.

As a fan myself, I’d put it this way: “I had a feeling my name would pop up in the credits. Yet, not this time around, I strongly doubt it,” McAvoy shared with Variety when asked about reprising his role in Deadpool and Wolverine. “If there ever was a universe where Xavier made an appearance, it seems they’ve discarded that concept entirely before even considering me for the part.”

The actor from “Speak No Evil” mentioned that he would always be open to considering a role or opportunity if it involves telling a compelling story. Whether it’s something familiar or entirely new, as long as the material is good, he’s ready to take part. However, it’s all speculative at this point.

McAvoy played Professor X in five X-Men films between 2011 and 2019: “X-Men: First Class,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “X-Men: Apocalypse,” “Deadpool 2,” and “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.” In January, McAvoy mentioned that he hasn’t received any communication from Marvel Studios but is open to returning for the role if they ask.

In addition to Jackman, some Marvel actors who reprised their roles after a significant time gap include Chris Evans (as the Human Torch from Fantastic Four), Jennifer Garner (as Elektra Natchios in Daredevil and Elektra), Dafne Keen (as Laura Kinney/X-23 in Logan), Wesley Snipes (as Blade, the vampire hunter), and Channing Tatum (as Gambit from an unmade X-Men spinoff who was sent to the Void). Currently, Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine can be seen only in cinemas.
