As a seasoned Marvel enthusiast with over three decades of comic book adventures under my belt, I must say that the latest cinematic collaboration between Deadpool and Wolverine has truly outdone itself. The return of Chris Evans as Johnny Storm and Aaron Stanford as Pyro was a delightful surprise, to say the least!
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Deadpool & Wolverine.
Following the anticipation of numerous cameo appearances, Deadpool and Wolverine didn’t fail to deliver, showcasing an array of fascinating character interplays that we hadn’t expected to witness again. These included Chris Evans reprising his role as Johnny Storm and Aaron Stanford stepping back into the shoes of Pyro.
In the movie, the duo engage in a confrontation at the onset, where Pyro is seen battling flames himself and skillfully warding off an assault by the Human Torch.
In the movie, the intense conflict between Johnny Storm and the pyrokinetic X-Men character was toned down significantly. This reduction was primarily due to the fact that Johnny Storm offers an optimal match for this fiery character from the X-Men team, as suggested by Stanford’s analysis.
However, during our shooting process, I came to understand that Pyro doesn’t view this as a fight since it’s his usual routine. Now, he seems to have encountered an optimal adversary because there’s no strife involved.
“He finds this task effortless; it would be challenging for others, but for him, it’s as simple as snapping one’s fingers. That’s why we concluded that he could absorb all the flames first, and then extinguish them as if they were insignificant.”
In that particular sequence, things turned out to be more intricate than they seemed at first glance. This is because the SAG-AFTRA strike was announced on the very day they filmed it. Consequently, the scene was initially recorded to emphasize Evans’ performances, while Stanford’s scenes were shot much later, months afterward.
Before the movie’s premiere, it was already known that Stanford played his part. However, numerous unexpected cameos such as Wesley Snipes portraying Blade and Channing Tatum embodying Gambit were hidden until the film’s debut itself.
Despite Marvel’s reputation for secrecy, the cast was provided with complete scripts, an action that Stanford perceived as a sign of respect.
“He noted that I was taken aback since they’re known for being very private,” he explained, “because it’s bizarre to me that people are always attempting to uncover secrets about it.”
As a long-time theater enthusiast with years of acting experience under my belt, I can confidently say that it’s crucial for actors to receive the full script before performing. In my early days, I remember stumbling through lines and scenes due to lack of understanding about the storyline or character development. It was only when I started receiving scripts in advance that I could truly immerse myself in the role and give a more authentic performance. So, not only is it the right thing to do for professional reasons, but it’s also a matter of respect towards us as actors who are part of the story being told.
In certain scenarios, I’m provided with only my lines or just a single scene, making it challenging to perform effectively as I lack the broader context. It’s like working in isolation, leaving me clueless about the overall picture.
“They provided the entire script, giving me a clear understanding of the main plot, the mood, and other details. This was really helpful.”
In the gripping climax of the movie, I bear witness to Pyro’s heart-wrenching end at the hands of Emma Corrin’s formidable Cassandra Nova. Yet, as a devoted Marvel enthusiast, I’ve learned time and again that an on-screen demise doesn’t necessarily seal the fate of a character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe indefinitely. Just look at Robert Downey Jr’s return as Doctor Doom – it only goes to show that there’s always room for surprises!
“Stanford grinned, saying, ‘It’s quite fitting if this is our farewell, and I’m glad it’s in this way. It’s heartwarming to see them revisit Pyro after so long. If this marks the end of our story, then what a wonderful ending!'”
However, it’s important to note that since the concept of the multiverse is present in comics, there are numerous variations of Pyro and other characters.
In my unexpected journey, I’ve come to realize that there are countless possibilities for unforeseen stories and realities. I would have never imagined receiving a call to join the dynamic duo of Deadpool and Wolverine. With this in mind, it’s hard to predict what future adventures might be waiting around the corner!
Deadpool & Wolverine is in cinemas now.
