As a long-time fan of Death in Paradise, this year’s Christmas special was undeniably moving. The storylines for both Mervin Wilson and Dwayne Myers struck a chord with me, resonating deeply due to my own experiences with family and the importance of cherishing every moment together.
The 2024 Death in Paradise Christmas special proved to be significant for two reasons.
Initially, it was the debut of the main detective on the show, Mervin Wilson, portrayed by Don Gilet, a familiar face from EastEnders.
He had travelled from London to Saint Marie to meet his mother for the first time, only to learn that she had died a few months prior.
However, amidst challenging personal conditions, he managed to crack an intricate case that involved the demise of two individuals in Santa suits and the attempted assassination of a third Santa-clad man. This impressive feat led the commissioner to extend the offer for him to remain on the team permanently.
He proposed that delving into his mother’s life might offer him an opportunity to discover more about her, and ultimately, about himself as well.
However, Mervin chose to reject the offer and seemed poised to go back to the United Kingdom – but rest assured, he isn’t actually leaving, regardless of his unofficial response.
Someone who might be leaving, however, is Dwayne Myers.
Danny John-Jules’s character nearly didn’t get to celebrate Christmas with his old father, as he was tasked by Selwyn to guard the suspected murder attempt victim, ensuring he was safe from further harm.
The news struck them like a devastating hammer blow – not just because they had meticulously planned an enjoyable day (enjoying beer and fishing out on the boat), but also because Dwayne keenly understands that his father’s time is running out, and each moment they spend together from now until the end holds immense value.
With that thought uppermost in his mind, he chose to go against his superior’s instructions and instead celebrate the holiday with his father, a decision that potentially could have brought down Selwyn’s anger upon him, but fortunately, it did not materialize.
Instead, it was Darlene who found out, and his secret is safe with her.
But that wasn’t the only big decision he made.
He informed his father that he would be submitting his badge, as he had come to understand that there are other priorities he needs to attend to in his life at the moment.
Dwayne also confirmed the news to Darlene.
In a casual chat, I was informed that you’ll be retiring from service to devote more time to your dear old man.
“Well, I couldn’t do both things,” he responded matter-of-factly.
There’s no season quite like Christmas to make you realise what’s really important.
In the show’s very first Christmas special aired in 2021, after his exit from Death in Paradise during season 7, Dwayne appears to be setting sail one more time. However, whether he will hold firm with his decisions is still uncertain.
