In the Death in Paradise Christmas special from last year, Mervin didn’t know that his mother Dorna had recently passed away, having been swept away during a storm while dispersing her father’s ashes at sea, only a few months before his arrival on the island of Saint Marie.
However, it became clear to the DI that things weren’t right, and by tonight’s broadcast on Friday, 14th March, everything would be unveiled.
Last week, I came to learn that a man named Roy Palmer, whom I had briefly encountered, was the tragic architect of a chilling event. It turns out that he was the mastermind behind an unfortunate fate, and Dorna’s friend and neighbor, Brianna, unwittingly assisted him due to his captivating allure.
50 years earlier, the bar proprietor encountered the woman on the island who eventually became smitten with Christopher, Mervin’s dad, and conceived a child. However, due to pressure from Christopher’s family, she was compelled to relinquish their baby.
At that time, Christopher had also given Dorna a ring, which she had worn every day since.
In her letter, she expressed, “This is painful, and it’s not the outcome I hoped for.” She continued, “This experience has changed me profoundly. It feels as though a part of me has been shattered and irrevocably altered.
Furthermore, I strongly recommend you listen to this. Ever since I returned, I haven’t removed it once, and I never will. I will always wear it, and every time I see it, it will remind me of our precious son.
Given its current value of two million dollars, and with Roy facing mounting debts, I found myself in a position where I felt compelled to seize the opportunity to keep that ring.
Dorna’s dad often visited Roy’s bar, using the opportunity to cultivate a friendship with Dorna.
On the day she passed away, he went to see Mervin’s mom, persuading her to dispersed his father’s remains on the very same day. Subtly, he administered a sedative to her without her knowledge.
Afterward, she decided to take the urn and bid farewell to her father on the beach, due to the impending storm, with the intention of carrying out this task.
However, during the journey, she found herself growing tired and had to stop the vehicle. At this point, Roy took over driving and unknowingly transported an unconscious Dorna back to her residence. Meanwhile, Brianna replaced Dorna’s attire with the clothes she wore earlier that day. In addition, while Dorna was unconscious, Roy seized the ring from Dorna’s finger.
Subsequently, Roy navigated Dorna towards the approaching storm at sea, leaving her aboard his vessel, before he paddled back ashore in a small inflatable boat.
Not long after, Brianna donned a disguise as her friend and set sail on Dorna’s father’s fishing boat. She subsequently exchanged her attire, stowing them on the deceased, whom she later transferred into Dorna’s boat. Finally, she navigated back to shore using Roy’s vessel.
But there was a hitch…
After the effects of the sedative worn by Dorna subsided, she awoke during the onset of a category 4 storm and phoned the harbor master using her cell phone.
Fortunately for Roy, the connection was weak and it dropped out. He assumed he was safe at home, but…
“Look, for what it’s worth, it was never personal,” said the bar owner.
In response, I mused, “Perhaps not, but indeed,” as I took him into custody, and simultaneously, Brianna found herself in a similar predicament. The stolen goods, the ring, were successfully retrieved.
Although the enigma surrounding his mother’s demise has at last been unraveled, a tantalizing riddle is set up in the season 14 finale trailer, promising more intrigue to come.
Mervin was preparing to return to London, as he had long intended, when he stumbled upon a note left at Dorna’s grave with the message, “May you rest in peace. From S.
“Who’s ‘S’?” he asks.
But will Mervin decide to stay and find out?
“I’m asking you to reconsider your decision to go back,” says Selwyn.
“You are not at the end of your journey. You are at the beginning.”
