As a seasoned actor with a rich background in theater, television, and film, Rakim Gilet approaches his role as Mervin in Death in Paradise with a unique perspective shaped by his diverse experiences. With a career spanning over two decades, he’s no stranger to the challenges of portraying complex characters that require a delicate balance between humor and drama.
After Ralf Little left Death in Paradise after season 13, the main character for the next part will be introduced by Don Gilet in tonight’s Christmas special (December 22nd).
Originally from EastEnders, the actor takes on the role of Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson. Upon our reintroduction post-vacation, it’s revealed that he’s returning to London, having found his trip home unsatisfying and deciding to leave Saint Marie behind.
However, despite his reservations, he chooses to stick around to aid the team in unraveling the mysteries surrounding the deaths of two individuals disguised as Santa, along with a failed assassination attempt on a third person.
Regarding the opportunity to join “Death in Paradise”, Gilet expressed it as if he had received an exceptionally cherished gem, saying: “It’s as if I’ve been given a beloved and highly valued treasure, a jewel, for safekeeping.
I find this production not only grand but also deeply touching. I aim to always remember its significance, and to remain thankful, humbled, and committed.
Regardless of difficult moments when all my instincts are urging me to abandon the scene, either by diving into the ocean, a swimming pool, or grabbing a cold drink nearby.
The complete evolution of Gilet’s character is being carefully hidden to enhance our viewing pleasure, but executive producer Tim Key has hinted at a “moving narrative” for him.
“He’s an amazing actor, he’s funny,” he said. “But he also has an emotional storyline.”
Key also said that it “feels as though he was born to lead” the show.
“From day one, it felt like he’d been there for ever,” he added. “We’re lucky to have him.”
In another part of the holiday special, it’s revealed that Dwayne was eagerly anticipating celebrating Christmas with his dad, Nelson. However, things don’t turn out as they had hoped, which left both of them feeling quite sad.
Initially, Danny John-Jules, the actor portraying Dwayne, left Death in Paradise at the conclusion of season 7. However, he reappeared in the series’ inaugural Christmas special that aired in 2021.
The character returned Nelson to the Caribbean from the UK as he noticed that Nelson wasn’t as full of vitality as before.
“That’s why we’re really back, this is where he wants to spend the rest of his days,” he explained.
With the clock ticking, will they get to enjoy another Christmas together?
Following the usual charm of Death in Paradise, even I found myself among an ensemble this holiday season, with Marcus Brigstocke making a memorable appearance as Stuart Fullwell – one of the unfortunate victims in our latest case.
You may be familiar with the comedian, who appears on shows like Have I Got News for You, QI, Would I Lie To You? and several others.
In the role of Angela Griffin’s character, Tabitha Meadow’s future spouse, is portrayed by this well-recognized actress who has appeared in series such as Coronation Street, Holby City, Waterloo Road, and more recent shows like White Lines and The Wives.
The synopsis has described the case as “one of the team’s most puzzling murder cases yet”.
You may recognize Steven Hartley from shows like The Bill, EastEnders, and Doctors. In the story, he portrays character Tony Hurst, a musician, who unfortunately meets the same fate.
Shantol Jackson, who plays Naomi Thomas, expressed her excitement by saying, “The murder mystery is absolutely something to be eager for.
She mentioned that this particular Christmas special stands out, as there are no less than three Santa Clauses in it,” he explained, acknowledging that the concept seemed somewhat absurd when spoken aloud: three individuals firing the same gun at approximately the same moment.
“So this is one of the biggest cases to date for the team.”
Enthusiasts of the show “Ghosts” are bound to get excited, as Jim Howick, the actor portraying Jamie Barton, one of the hotel guests alongside Stuart and Tabitha, makes an appearance.
You might also recognise him from Sex Education and Horrible Histories.
He’s joined by other distinguished guest stars, including Elizabeth Carling from Hotel Portofino, Michael Salami of Supacell, and Dex Lee, who you may know from his work on Doctors.
And of course it wouldn’t be Death in Paradise without its longest-serving cast member, Don Warrington, who returns as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson.
Like the rest of the Honoré PD, he initially “struggles with Mervin’s unusual working methods”.
Initially, Jackson noted that the individual doesn’t come across well, yet we’ve discovered that he excels at completing tasks efficiently. While he may not be as sociable as we’d like, his abilities are undeniable. We’re still working on getting used to his style of interaction, but it’s clear that he’s competent in what he does.
Though we’re pleased he’s here, there are times when we wish he weren’t, and this tension is evident throughout the episode.
When discussing his apprehensions before appearing on the show, Gilet mentioned: “It’s challenging to balance the dark aspects of a murder with injecting some humor into it. This was what intrigued me about it.
This show isn’t like The Wire or True Detective, nor is it a straightforward comedy. Combining those elements consistently, let alone taking responsibility for it, seems challenging. That’s one aspect that made me apprehensive when joining this project.
Additionally, Gilet mentioned that there were instances where he doubted if he would excel or even succeed at this task.
Being here for some time now, I’ve noticed they make it look effortless, but can I really manage it in the same way?” he queried further.
However, despite its persistent growth, I find myself increasingly compelled to tackle it. It’s something that has been developing over time, and it seems to be expanding right now. Yet, I feel as though I am about to immerse myself in it.
I hope it remains popular and more people find interest in it, rather than losing interest.
