Death in Paradise’s Don Gilet has “emotional storyline” as new detective

As a seasoned connoisseur of crime dramas and a devoted fan of the tropical paradise that is Saint Marie, I must say that the arrival of DI Mervin Wilson, played by Don Gilet, has me more than intrigued. Having followed the series since its inception, I’ve seen the revolving door of detective leads on the island, and while each one brings a fresh perspective to the storyline, there’s always a certain apprehension about whether the newcomer will live up to expectations.

This Christmas, viewers will meet the newest arrival to Saint Marie, DI Mervin Wilson.

As a film enthusiast, let me tell you this: It so happens I’m taking a vacation on an island, and here’s an intriguing twist – sporting a Santa suit is riskier than just dealing with a fake beard in the tropical heat of the Caribbean!

In the upcoming series, we find Wilson tasked with solving a crime, a responsibility he bears personally – a plot thread that promises further exploration.

Tim Key, the executive producer of Death in Paradise, expresses his joy over the casting of Don Gilet as the new main detective on the show. Known for roles in EastEnders, Holby City, and 55 Degrees North, Gilet is a familiar face to many viewers.

This individual is exceptionally talented in acting. He brings humor and depth through his character, making it seem like he was destined for our production. Since the very first day, it was as if he’s always been a part of our team. We consider ourselves fortunate to have him on board.

About the frequent changes in leadership among Saint Marie’s most diligent detective, Key mentions that maintaining a balance is crucial to keep viewers satisfied: “It’s never an easy task. When we swapped Ben Miller for Kris Marshall, we wondered if the show could endure such a shift. But it did, and even flourished. The trick with a series like ours is to give the audience what they desire and anticipate, while still keeping things interesting.” He chuckles. “The goal is to make it familiar yet novel.

In April 2024, during the early stages of filming the new season, Gilet’s first full-length episode was set in a festive mood. As Key explained, “We wanted to fully embrace what a Caribbean Christmas feels like – everyone on the beach.” He added, “There’s no need for formal wear; it’s simply too warm.

The main figure behind the entire ‘Paraverse’ – comprising Death in Paradise, Kris Marshall’s Beyond Paradise, and the latest addition, Return to Paradise starring Anna Samson – is indeed the producer. Filming festive episodes for Death in Paradise required sweltering Santas, but filming the UK spin-off, Beyond Paradise, proved to be a bit easier, as he shares.

In November 2023, we shot the Beyond Paradise Christmas special. Since it was already winter, filming conditions were ideal as it was chilly and dark. The team didn’t need prompting; they themselves brought the holiday spirit with their festive sweaters and youthful energy.

For the success of all three shows, Key credits “the escapist element, plus we’re operating in a traditional, much-loved genre”.

“People want a bit of comedy, a puzzle and a satisfying conclusion.”

And a love of crime at Christmas?

“Perhaps the reason for watching this show is that it offers a release for families who’ve been spending too much time together and are feeling tense. Yet, I’d rather think of it as a family-friendly mystery, akin to playing a board game on TV.
