At the “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” event during SXSW 2025, director Hideo Kojima has already expressed his apologies for Higgs’ eccentricity as a character within the game. During this panel, Kojima shared that Higgs (portrayed by Troy Baker again), will be significantly improved and much stronger compared to his portrayal in the first “Death Stranding” game.
Kojima stated, “Higgs isn’t merely twice or thrice superior; it’s 100 times better than DS1.” By the end, you’ll likely be astonished by Higgs and might even toss aside the controller in disbelief. I offer my apologies in advance for the extraordinary nature of this game.
In response to the character’s eccentricity, the baker said, “Consider it a success if that’s what you do.” (Or alternatively, “If that’s your move, then mission accomplished.”)
Kojima elaborated on the reasoning behind reintroducing Higgs in “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.” His explanation revolved around the widespread affection for the character from the first “Death Stranding.” He pointed out that, given how much fans adored Higgs, the quality of the sequel needed to be significantly improved.
As a devoted fan, I recall the immense popularity of Higgs last time, leaving me thinking “I just can’t eliminate him.” However, it seems he’s making a return! But let me clarify, Higgs isn’t your typical antagonist. He’s a cherished character. Therefore, I felt compelled to elevate his role not just one or two steps higher, but three, in this new narrative.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about reprising my role as Higgs in “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.” It’s fascinating to delve into the intricate world Hideo Kojima has crafted, and I can’t wait to see how each character unfolds. Every actor involved is committed to bringing Kojima’s vision for this game to life, and that dedication is truly inspiring.
Baker remarked, as he gestured towards Kojima, ‘When crafting a universe similar to Hideo’s, everyone is simply attempting to capture the vision in his mind.’ It’s an astonishing world filled with astounding characters, and our task is merely to play it moment by moment and scene by scene.
At SXSW 2025, the same stage unveiled a fresh trailer for “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach”. The event additionally disclosed that this sequel will be available on PS5 as early as June 26. This sneak peek not only offered a deep dive into the seemingly eccentric narrative of “Death Stranding 2”, but also showcased new adversaries and characters.
One of the fresh faces we’ve seen in the latest trailer is Neil, portrayed by Luca Marinelli. In a recent social media update, Kojima shared insights into how he got to know Marinelli and the process behind casting him for this role. Kojima also hinted that Neil will have a role similar to Mads Mikkelsen’s character Cliff from the original Death Stranding.
A tour commemorating the music from the game “Death Stranding” was announced, known as the Strands of Harmony World Tour. Tickets for these concerts will be up for grabs starting March 12 and onward. The initial leg of this tour begins in Sydney, Australia in November, followed by stops in Canada, specifically Montreal and Toronto, in March 2026.
