As the release date of “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” approaches on June 26, director Hideo Kojima has shared that early testing feedback for the game has been quite favorable. In an interview with Edge Magazine (through VGC), Kojima mentioned that reactions from test audiences for the upcoming sequel have been even more enthusiastic than what he experienced for the first “Death Stranding”.
Kojima shared insights into his creative process, explaining that he carefully considers feedback from playtests. He pays attention to comments regarding technical elements such as camera controls, but he refrains from modifying the narratives or themes of his games to appeal to a broader audience.
As a dedicated creator, I’m open to constructive criticism when it comes to fine-tuning controls or adjusting the pace of camera pans within my game. However, the core themes and narrative are non-negotiable for me. Despite my desire for wide-ranging engagement with my work, I’m not compelled to create something that appeals universally to everyone.
Additionally, he discussed his definition of success, emphasizing positive feedback from a test group, and reiterating that he’s not focused on pleasing every audience member. Kojima believes a game being liked by 40% of the players strikes a “good balance.” Furthermore, he hopes his work would spark more debate and controversy, as he prefers creating games unlike mainstream blockbuster films.
Actually, I conducted numerous test plays for the first “Death Stranding”. It turned out that four out of every ten people adored the game, while six considered it awful. Personally, I see that as a fair balance. However, during the playtests for “Death Standing 2: On the Beach”, everyone seems to have positive feedback.
Sony is content, yet there’s a part of me yearning for more debate. Achieving an 80% approval rating for blockbuster films isn’t my goal – I prefer to create games that aren’t just popular but also push boundaries. Mass market appeal and selling millions of copies are not my focus; I aim for something different.
Kojima also points out that it’s not feasible for him to launch a game that nobody would appreciate, given his responsibilities as a studio owner such as managing the business, taking care of his team, and ensuring they have the necessary resources. In essence, he doesn’t aim to just replicate something that already exists; instead, he strives to create something fresh and unique.
Preparing for the global release of “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach,” exclusively on PS5, Kojima Productions has also unveiled plans for a world tour. This tour, starting in Los Angeles on June 8 and running until November, will visit 12 cities around the globe to commemorate the game’s launch. In the interim, hear what creator Hideo Kojima has shared about incorporating a day/night cycle into “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
