Deborah Ann Woll Has The Best Way to Introduce Newcomers to Dungeons & Dragons

As a seasoned gamer with decades of role-playing adventures under my belt, I can confidently say that Deborah Ann Woll has masterfully demonstrated the art of introducing newcomers to the captivating world of Dungeons & Dragons. Her approach, rooted in immersion and storytelling, encapsulates the essence of what makes this game so appealing.

As a long-time fan of Dungeons & Dragons, I can certainly empathize with both newcomers and Dungeon Masters (DMs) when it comes to introducing the game to novices. Having been there myself, I remember feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of the rules and the daunting task of creating a character. However, I’ve also seen countless times how the game can bring people together and create memorable experiences that last a lifetime.

As a greenhorn in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, I’m Jon Bernthal – and let me tell you, Deborah Ann Woll, my exceptional DM, has been leading the charge at our gaming table with confidence and charm. On her REAL ONES podcast, she eased me into this new realm by giving me a taste of what D&D is all about. Even though I’m hooked, there’s no denying that I harbored some concerns about whether or not I could master the art of Dungeons & Dragons.

In order to familiarize her regular scene partner with the game, she arranges a familiar scenario often encountered by Dungeons & Dragons players: Bernthal finds himself navigating through a forest, carrying a bow and swords (one at his belt), when only scant moonlight filters through the trees. A sound, like a snap, echoes in the distance, prompting him to seek clarification before proceeding, as any cautious D&D player would do.

He inquires about the distance (he asks “How distant?”), prompting Woll to delve into details about Dungeons & Dragons, such as its rules, settings, creatures, and history. When Bernthal queries about the objective of the game and wonders if it’s all about winning, Woll provides a fitting response:

“The goal is to tell a great story.”

In the following discussion, you’ll find Woll talking about how playing Dungeons & Dragons influences her professional acting work and her private life.
