A decades-old mystery surrounding a missing Utah teen has been solved.
41 years ago, in 1983, the remains found in Arches National Park near Moab were confirmed to be those of Robby Lynn Peay, a 17-year-old boy who had gone missing after fleeing from a youth treatment center. Although this finding brings closure to a longstanding cold case, an ongoing homicide investigation is being conducted by Grand County detectives in collaboration with Fox 13 Salt Lake City. As a dedicated follower of the news, I am closely watching developments in this case.
In October 1982, Robby, a local resident of Provo, escaped from a youth treatment center in Salt Lake City. This led to the opening of a missing persons case, as stated by the Provo Police Department on their Instagram account in March 1983. Then, in February 1983, an unidentified corpse was found in the Three Gossips area within Arches National Park, Grand County, Utah, according to the authorities.
In their report, the police stated that the corpse seemed to share certain traits with Peay, but had a fatal head wound, and identifying it definitively was challenging because the body had begun to decompose.
A decades-old mystery surrounding a missing Utah teen has been solved.
Authorities have confirmed that the remains found in Arches National Park near Moab in 1983 belong to Robby Lynn Peay, a 17-year-old who went missing after escaping from a youth care facility in 1982. Though this finding brings a resolution to a 41-year-old cold case, the Grand County detectives are still investigating as a homicide case, as reported by Fox 13 based in Salt Lake City.
Back in October 1982, Robby, who lived in Provo, escaped from a youth treatment center in Salt Lake City. As a result, the Provo Police Department initiated a missing person investigation, as they announced on Instagram in March of that year. In February 1983, officials discovered an unidentified corpse in the Three Gossips region of Arches National Park, Grand County, Utah.
In their report, the police stated that the deceased seemed to share traits with Peay, but had a fatal head wound from a gunshot. Unfortunately, positive identification was impossible because the body’s remains had decomposed.
350 miles from Lake Powell, Utah, Robby’s pickup truck was discovered abandoned several months ago. According to Provo police reports from 2022, it seems that the truck may have been intentionally thrown into the lake after fixing its steering wheel in place, as suggested by KSL.com.
Although the missing truck was found, the case remained unsolved because no additional clues were uncovered, as stated by the police. Consequently, Robby’s relatives initiated proceedings to legally declare him dead in 1990, and a grave marker was placed in a cemetery for him.
Nevertheless, investigators within their department persistently examined the case for several years. In 2018, one of these detectives included Robby’s details in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs), a system that had been operational since 2007.
A forensic dentist examining old cases on NamUs found that Robby’s X-ray details had been input incorrectly in sequence. After correcting the data, there was a high likelihood of match with DNA extracted from the remains. Although this wasn’t an official finding, it provided detectives with a potential lead to follow up on.
They uncovered that Robby had been adopted and traced his biological family using genealogical studies, finding an uncle who supplied a DNA sample. Upon exhumation, NamUs found an unidentified DNA profile for the remains from another county department. The Utah Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the samples matched.
40 years after Robby Peay went missing, the Provo Police Department Detective Sergeant Patterson announced on Instagram, a breakthrough was made using dental records and DNA testing. This vital evidence allowed us to identify an unidentified person, finally providing answers to a family who had spent decades in doubt and uncertainty.
