DELTARUNE Chapter 3 – How to BEAT Roaring Knight BOSS & Get Shadow Crystal

In Chapter 3 of DELTARUNE, there’s a hidden Shadow Crystal waiting for you, but it won’t come easy. You’ll have to conquer the formidable Roaring Knight Boss, one of the most challenging battles in the game. To succeed, you’ll need to be at your best and meet specific conditions. If you find yourself stuck against this boss, don’t worry! This guide will walk you through an effective strategy to defeat the Roaring Knight and secure that Shadow Crystal. Let’s get started!

How to BEAT Roaring Knight BOSS & Get Shadow Crystal

To defeat the Roaring Knight boss in Deltarune, the initial crucial step you must accomplish is acquiring the Shadow Mantle.

As a gamer, I can tell you that without the Shadow Mantle, the boss is going to end me in one swift blow. If I don’t have that Shadow Mantle, my only option to grab the Shadow Crystal would be to restart from the beginning.

Before The Fight – Preparations

Once you’ve acquired the Shadow Mantle and reached a stage where you feel confident to challenge the Roaring Knight, it’s time to get ready for the upcoming battle.

It’s recommended to consider acquiring the Devilsknife, as it minimizes your use of Rude Buster TP. Given that you’ll primarily rely on the Rude Buster for offensive purposes, this item can prove to be very beneficial.

Of course, try to bring all the top gear that you have with you.

Furthermore, it is highly advised that you return and store your progress following your victory against Tenna. Failure to do so means you’ll have to confront her once more before engaging the Roaring Knight.

Start Of The Fight

At the beginning of the battle, try to hold your breath for additional movement agility, as advised by Kris. Subsequently, your main objective should be to strike with Susie and protect as Ralsei. Later in the fight, you can concentrate solely on defending using both Kris and Ralsei, while Susie continues to attack.

Regarding who should receive the Shadow Mantle, you’ve got two possibilities at hand. One option is to pass it on to Susie, making her better equipped to absorb higher amounts of damage since she won’t be on a defensive role. However, given that she has the highest health among you all, she’s also capable of taking hits head-on.

In such a situation, it would be appropriate to bestow the Shadow Mantle upon Kris, seeing as she holds the second most crucial role within our group. And to enhance Susie’s offensive capabilities, you might consider gifting her your top-tier defensive armor instead.

Fight Strategy

To triumph in the battle against the Roaring Knight boss, aim to reduce its Health Points (HP) by approximately 25%. This means you should strive to bring it down to between 60% and 70% of its total HP. This is the key strategy for winning the fight.

Regarding the approach, you’ll primarily use the “Rude Buster” attack during your battle against Susie. Simultaneously, try to protect yourself using both Susie and Kris whenever it’s feasible.

If needed, it would be best to rely on Kris for healing purposes. This is due to the fact that Susie or Ralsei can reach a critical state of -999 HP during a fight, which can only be restored using Revive Mints. In contrast, Kris will only drop to -80 HP when defeated.

Whenever you possess the TP (Turning Point), consistently employ the “Polite Communicator” with Susie. When you find yourself low on TP, make it a point to primarily focus on defense, yet strive to launch an offensive whenever feasible.

Additionally, always hit Z right before a Rude Buster hit for a damage boost.

Surviving Boss Attacks

During your battle against The Thundering Knight leader in Deltarune, you’ll encounter a variety of challenging attack patterns. In all, there are five distinct attack styles that you’ll need to adapt to as the fight unfolds, with each one becoming progressively more demanding.

Here is a breakdown of the attacks, with the best way to survive them:

  • Ice Crystal Barrage
    • The hitboxes are smaller than they look so you can simply pass through the crystals
    • Damage is lower than other attacks, so getting hit once or twice is survivable
    • Be sure to get away from the explosions at the end
  • Gaster Sword Blasters
    • Stay in the middle and only move when it’s about to fire
    • Avoid going to corners or you can get stuck there
    • Can one shot a defending, max-HP Ralsei so be careful!
  • Lemonbread Slash
    • Avoid moving too early as you can dodge into the attack and get damaged
    • Hug the walls so you have maximum reaction time
  • Swords’ Dance
    • Incredibly unforgiving hitbox with no invincibility frames
    • The best thing you can do here is to move slow and focus hard
  • Regular Slash
    • Easiest attack to dodge as it is very telegraphed
    • Avoid moving too much and only do so when the attack is coming
    • If you know this attack is coming, it’s your best opportunity to heal

Despite employing various tactics, there’s a high probability of getting hit due to Roaring Knight’s relentless toughness. However, mastering its attack patterns and persisting through the challenge is key!

End Of Fight

As I near the climax of our battle, the Roaring Knight begins to pulse bright white. You should know by now that this usually means he’s down to about 60-70% health.

This indicates that his impending assault will be unlike any other you’ve encountered thus far.

As a gamer, I’ve found myself cornered against the boss, and when it unleashes its grand finale, it’s a dazzling spectacle that leaves me in awe. Yet, the seemingly beautiful moves hide an unforgiving reality – the hitbox is ruthless! It seems like every pixel on my screen could potentially deal damage to me!

Aim to position yourself on either side of the screen rather than in the corners at its base. Doing so will provide you with ample space to maneuver and evade incoming attacks more effectively.

Keep focused and do not make unnecessary movements – and this will allow you to survive it.

From there, all you need to do is attack him normally and you’ll complete the fight!

Getting Shadow Crystal

Once you’ve successfully conquered the Thundering Knight, a scene will unfold (to keep things spoiler-free). After regaining control, proceed towards the direction where the boss previously stood – that is, head to your right.

You’ll be able to pick up the Shadow Crystal from there.

Furthermore, you’ll gain possession of the Black Shard, a formidable weapon that is particularly powerful for Kris at the current phase.

You now know everything essential for beating the Roaring Knight boss in Deltarune. Regardless of these tactics, it might take several attempts to conquer this boss as his attacks are extremely harsh. To succeed, you’ll need to practice and understand the attack patterns. Stay patient and persevere, and you’ll defeat him soon enough.
