Demi Moore's The Substance Gets Shocking New Trailer

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for horror movies and a soft spot for Demi Moore, I must say that my anticipation for The Substance is reaching critical levels. With Coralie Fargeat’s impressive track record and Demi Moore stepping into the realm of horror, this film promises to be a wild ride.

Among the movies generating buzz at film festivals is “The Substance,” directed by Coralie Fargeat, whose fresh trailer has been released. Given Fargeat’s success with her previous work “Revenge” that captivated genre enthusiasts and found a home on Shudder streaming service, it’s no wonder that this new production is receiving acclaim. What sets this film apart, however, is the exceptional acting by Demi Moore, who may not be as well-known in the horror genre. Take a look at the newly released trailer for “The Substance” before its theater release on September 20th.

The film, “The Substance,” features Demi Moore delivering an outstanding performance as Elisabeth Sparkle, a once prominent figure in the entertainment industry who has been unceremoniously dismissed from her fitness television program by the unsavory studio head Harvey (Dennis Quaid). Intrigued by a mysterious new drug, she decides to try it, and with just one injection, she transforms – albeit temporarily – into the youthful Sue (Margaret Qualley). The catch? She must share her time equally between the two bodies, never staying in one for more than a week. A delicate equilibrium. What could possibly go awry? This deliriously entertaining and bitingly satirical film, directed by Coralie Fargeat at Cannes, flips beauty culture upside down with a cautionary tale for the ages. Packed with explosive, thought-provoking, and twisted moments, The Substance signals the emergence of an exceptionally visionary filmmaker.

The film currently has a high approval rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, but this is based on early screenings worldwide. As the film festival season progresses and “The Substance” gets shown to more audiences, there’s a chance the ratings might shift, although with almost 50 reviews so far, it’s unlikely we’ll see major changes that would substantially alter its overall score.

At “The Daily Beast,” Esther Zuckerman described the movie “The Substance” as incredibly bloody, even more so than one might expect. If you think the film contains a lot of blood, multiply that by two or three. However, the blood isn’t what made this bizarre body horror spectacle nearly unwatchable for me; it was the unsettling flesh movements that came close to making me retch. The audience at the Cannes screening I attended reacted similarly, with cheers, gasps, and applause. This gory film might just be the most revolting thing you’ll see this year.

The Substance hits theaters on September 20th.
