Den of Thieves 2 : Pantera – PRIME VIDEO

In the sequel to 2018’s Den of Thieves, titled Den of Thieves 2: Panther, Gerard Butler reprises his iconic role as Big Nick. After a rough patch following his failure to apprehend Donnie Wilson (O’Shea Jackson Jr), the mastermind from the first film, he finds himself demoted, divorced, and discontent. However, when he learns about a diamond heist in Antwerp, he suspects it’s the work of Wilson. This renews his determination to bring him to justice. He convinces his superior to assign him to Panther, not a heavy metal band but a French police unit specializing in taking down jewelry thieves. It turns out that Wilson has joined this gang to sell a pink diamond he stole in Antwerp, which is actually a cover for the gang to rob a diamond center. For Wilson, the pink diamond is the start of his problems because it belongs to a mafia boss known as ‘the octopus’, who orders his men to retrieve that gemstone.

However, Big Nick successfully persuades Wilson that his law enforcement career has reached its end and offers him a chance to earn substantial wealth by participating in a diamond heist with the gang. This argument is as compelling as saying, ‘I have no spare change’, or ‘I was stuck in traffic’, or even more so, ‘I had dinner at Pizza Express in Woking’. As the situation becomes tense due to the need to restore the pink diamond to the mafia leader and execute the heist at the heavily fortified diamond center, the tension rises. This bonding period between them unfolds like a budding friendship, or what one might call a “bromance”, as they share tales about their pasts and how they entered their respective professions.

Similar to the initial movie Den of Thieves 2: Panther, this extended cut could have profited from some editing, but it introduces more humor and deepens the camaraderie, particularly with Butler’s Big Nick, whose gruffness is endearing. The final hour, where the heist occurs and a thrilling car chase between an electric Porsche and Audi unfolds – reminiscent of Bond films – is truly remarkable. Just like the first film, this sequel draws inspiration from Michel Mann’s classic ‘Heat’, with its cop-villain dynamic, cool blue-lit, synth-scored sequences featuring high-speed chases through the winding roads of the Cote D’Azur. This follow-up is worthy of a cinematic release, and we eagerly anticipate the potential for a third installment.
