Den of Thieves 3 Officially Confirmed (But Who Will Return for the Sequel?)

In just a few weeks since the release of “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera”, it’s been confirmed that “Den of Thieves 3” is in development. As reported by Variety, the main cast, Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr., are expected to return for the sequel, reprising their roles as Nick O’Brien and Donnie Wilson respectively. Christian Gudegast, who penned and directed the first two films, is said to be in discussions to write and direct “Den of Thieves 3”. At present, no plot details have been revealed, and it’s unclear when production on “Den of Thieves 3” will start.

The Den of Thieves series began with the premiere of its first movie in 2018. Although it received a mix of positive and negative critic reviews, it was financially successful, generating $80.5 million worldwide on a production budget of $30 million. Den of Thieves 2 made its debut earlier this month, topping its opening weekend with a domestic box office take of $15 million. As of now, the film has accumulated global earnings of approximately $41.8 million.

Before the release of “Den of Thieves 2”, Butler and Jackson expressed enthusiasm for a potential third installment. The actors appeared reluctant to leave the franchise, with Butler stating to egmr.ru that “We’re just getting started” when asked if “Den of Thieves 2” marked the end. Jackson agreed, saying “We can’t let the fire go out while we’re at our hottest”. They both emphasized that as long as they keep the storylines open, it’s ultimately up to the audience and their support.

It’s reasonable that Lionsgate wants to carry on with the franchise given the impressive dynamic between Butler and Jackson on screen. The second installment of Den of Thieves plays with the formula by having Nick and Donnie work together instead of being adversaries, mirroring the real-life friendship between the actors. Although the Den of Thieves movies haven’t received critical acclaim, it would be exciting to see Butler and Jackson collaborate again on another thrilling heist. Additionally, Den of Thieves has been a dependable asset for Lionsgate, managing to find a niche in the mid-January release window, which is often a time when less popular films are released. However, the Den of Thieves series has consistently drawn action fans, making it a worthwhile investment.

Excited about the prospect of Butler and Jackson reprising their roles in “Den of Thieves 3”, we’re curious to find out how swiftly the sequel might take flight. The gap between the premieres of the initial two parts was seven years, which is a relatively longer span compared to other similar series (for example, Butler’s Fallen films were issued three years apart). Hopefully, the production of “Den of Thieves 3” won’t take as long and fans can look forward to seeing Nick and Donnie back together soon.
