Denzel Washington remained unfazed by not receiving an Oscar nomination this year, despite his stellar performance in Gladiator II. In a recent interview with The New York Times, he appeared untroubled by the omission from the list of nominees. Washington confessed that he had hoped for the prestigious honor, but his attention was mainly directed towards his work and the fulfillment it brings him. He extended his congratulations to this year’s nominees, recognizing that he has been nominated on numerous occasions before – a total of nine times, with two wins. Washington is content to witness another deserving actor receive recognition this time around.
On the morning when the Oscar nominations were announced, finding myself seated there with a grin on my face, I thought to myself, “Well aren’t you something! Here you are, not receiving an Oscar nod, yet immersed in the challenging role of Othello on Broadway.” In a somewhat sarcastic manner, I mused, “Really? This is just too much. Aww, how unfortunate for me.” Yet, deep down, I was genuinely content, as I am overjoyed for those who were nominated and proud of the work I’m doing.
He went on to say, “I’ve been here for quite some time now, and I’ve come to realize there are certain realities at this stage in life. Let me continue with my point: The foundation of wisdom lies in understanding. I’m growing wiser each day, trying to talk less and listen more – and that’s truly exhilarating.
It was widely expected that Washington would receive a nomination since his portrayal of Macrinus had previously earned him nods for Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. However, the Oscars selected five other actors for this year’s category—Yura Borisov for “Anora”, Kieran Culkin for “A Real Pain”, Edward Norton for “A Complete Unknown”, Guy Pearce for “The Brutalist”, and Jeremy Strong for “The Apprentice”. On the other hand, only one nomination for best costume design was given to “Gladiator II”.
Noteworthy is the fact that Washington received his first two Oscar nods for Best Supporting Actor in 1988 and 1990, but since then, he hasn’t been nominated in that category again. However, out of the seven subsequent nominations he received, they were all for Best Lead Actor. Despite frequently playing supporting roles, Washington has garnered significant recognition as a leading man. His first win was for Best Supporting Actor in Glory in 1990, and his second victory came for Best Lead Actor in Training Day in 2002. His latest nomination was for The Tragedy of Macbeth in 2022.
Some enthusiasts had anticipated that Gladiator II would receive greater recognition during award season, but it failed to achieve the level of fan adoration that the initial film garnered two decades prior. Conversely, it’s understandable to believe that Gladiator II merited more applause than some movies that were actually nominated. However, there has been significant criticism for the most-nominated film of the year — the Netflix original Emilia Pérez. In summary, 2025 might not be recalled as a particularly fierce competition at the Oscars.
Title II: Gladiator’s Return is currently streaming and easily accessible. The film can be watched on Sling TV, Paramount+, and as an add-on for Prime Video (MGM+). Pre-orders for DVD and Blu-ray versions are now open, with sales starting from March 4th. As Washington shared, he’s currently starring in a Broadway production of Othello alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. Tickets are available right away, and the show is set to run for 15 weeks beginning on February 24th.
