Dept Q

Here are some newly unveiled sneak peeks of the upcoming Netflix crime drama titled Dept Q, penned and directed by Scott Frank, who is also known for his work on The Queen’s Gambit.

The pictures present Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck, portrayed by actor Matthew Goode from The Crown, a character known for his bold yet intelligent demeanor, heading the investigation team for unsolved cases based in Edinburgh.

Additionally, in the photos, you can spot actors such as Chloe Pirrie (Under the Banner of Heaven), Kelly Macdonald (Line of Duty), Mark Bonnar (Shetland), Leah Byrne (Call The Midwife), Alexej Manvelov (Jack Ryan), Kate Dickie (Loki), Jamie Sives (Annika), Shirley Henderson (Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy) and Tom Bulpett (Father Brown). As a devoted cinephile, I’d rephrase that as follows: “I’m DCI Carl Morck, a top-notch detective with an unmatched wit, but my biting sarcasm has left me with fewer allies than I’d like within the Edinburgh Police department.

The narrative progresses: “Following a tragic shooting that claims the life of a young police officer and leaves his companion paralyzed, he is relegated to the basement and becomes the lone investigator for Dept Q – a recently established team dedicated to resolving long-unsolved cases.

The department appears to be more about creating a positive image rather than addressing the underlying issues, serving as a diversion from the struggles and decline of a police force with limited resources, which may welcome his departure.

By chance rather than intent, Carl gradually assembles a group of underdogs, each eager to demonstrate their worth.

When the cold case of a well-known government official who’s been missing for some time begins showing signs of activity, Carl once again dives into his familiar role, which includes stirring up trouble and persistently pushing for answers despite being told ‘no’.

I’m thrilled to share that the much-anticipated premiere of this series is officially set! Mark your calendars for 29th May 2025, as every episode will be available exclusively on Netflix. Can’t wait to join you all in this exciting journey!

The television series draws inspiration from a collection of dark crime books written by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen. For more than twenty years, Frank has expressed his ambition to transform these novels into a show.

He mentioned that the title itself, along with the concept of a place named Department Q, left an impression on him.

During my time filming A Walk Among the Tombstones in New York, I had the opportunity to meet with the author. Interestingly, I’d already owned those books for a couple of years before our encounter.

Frank mentioned that Adler-Olsen had faith in him and was content to delay the adaptation until the author/director felt prepared.

Frank has now written all nine episodes of the series and directed six of them.
