Despite Unfathomable Marketing Spend, Fatal Fury Appears to Have Flopped

As a passionate gamer, I’ve always been excited about the fighting games from SNK, especially Fatal Fury. Rumors were swirling that they were backed by some serious Saudi Arabian investment, aiming to create the ultimate fighting game – City of the Wolves. However, it seems like their ambitious plan didn’t quite pan out as expected.

The organization brought global sports icon, Cristiano Ronaldo, onto their team for upcoming events; they supported boxing bouts and persuaded internet sensations like IShowSpeed to broadcast them live; they also declared an exceptionally large prize fund for a groundbreaking tournament.

The results? A leadership transition, with CEO Kenji Matsubara stepping down into an advisory role.

The company’s declaration praises Matsubara for significantly growing SNK by broadening the development department, enhancing sales and marketing channels, ultimately turning it into a globally competitive publishing entity that can hold its ground on a worldwide scale.

Despite what we’ve learned, the sales figures have been dismal. The game managed to sell only 6,302 copies on the PS5 within Japan during Golden Week, and it failed to appear in the top downloads of the PS Store for April.

Indeed, even with its current flaws, City of the Wolves remains an enjoyable game and might continue to thrive in the future. However, we can’t help but express a sentiment that perhaps those vast resources in Saudi Arabia could have been more effectively utilized on enhancing the gameplay itself, rather than over-the-top promotional efforts.
