It’s common knowledge among gaming enthusiasts that the game ‘Destiny 2’ has experienced both high points and low points in its lifespan. The upcoming DLC, titled ‘Edge of Fate’, will serve as a barometer for how the next chapter in the ‘Destiny’ saga unfolds. For the past few years, developers Bungie have struggled to manage ‘Destiny’, leading to uncertainty about its future due to fluctuating player numbers and inconsistent gameplay quality. Although ‘Edge of Fate’ won’t decide whether the game continues or not, it will set the tone for whether this next phase of ‘Destiny’ gets off to a good start.
Inconsistent Player Counts Mark a Wavering Fanbase
The game Destiny 2 has been around for more than ten years, debuting in September 2014. Throughout this period, player engagement with the game has seen significant fluctuations. As per SteamCharts, the player base of D2 hit a high of 316,651 in February 2023 when Lightfall was launched, but numbers have decreased steadily since then. Although the player count came close to that peak again with The Final Shape’s release, many players associate Lightfall as the start of doubts about Destiny 2’s future.
One major drawback of the game ‘Lightfall’ was its storytelling, with inconsistent rhythm and characters that failed to resonate deeply, leaving many players puzzled about the narrative purpose, especially when it was presented in an unnatural way. This led to a sudden drop in player count that’s not typically seen; while player numbers usually decrease after DLC releases, this usually happens gradually over several months instead of immediately following release. The introduction of Root of Nightmares, one of the simplest and least captivating raids in ‘D2’, also contributed to a decline in player interaction during the year post-‘Lightfall’ launch.
In simpler terms, many fans felt let down by Lightfall, but The Final Shape restored some trust in Bungie’s game-making skills. However, the seasonal content changes have left players wanting more and feeling unengaged, making the game feel repetitive for those seeking fresh experiences. Moreover, attracting new players to a storyline that’s nearly a decade old has been challenging for Bungie’s team.
Bungie is Making Big Swings
It’s never claimed that the developers of Destiny 2 shy away from alterations; they’re implementing substantial changes to key aspects of the game, such as armor, weapons, player abilities, and more. Alterations of this nature are not unusual, given that previous DLCs have introduced overhauls for mods, armor, and other fundamental systems. However, the reduction in player power has left many players feeling dissatisfied.
Among the aspects that long-time players appreciate in Destiny is the power fantasy experience, and dropping from over 2000 power down to just 10 is quite a significant drop. Although enemy health and challenge level are being adjusted with this modification, it’s still a bold move that could benefit the game as a whole. Power creep can negatively impact both PvE and PvP experiences, and maintaining a balanced sandbox not only simplifies the job of developers when it comes to balancing the game, but also makes it easier for new players to join in activities with their experienced friends. The developers of D2 are aware that they need to make significant choices if they want to keep the game thriving for another decade, and we’ll see whether or not those decisions prove successful with the release of Edge of Fate.
Edge of Fate is a Fresh Start for Destiny
The Destiny team often adds DLCs, but Edge of Fate is intended to stand out. It features updated menus, a fresh player introduction process, and a more open campaign mode. Edge of Fate aims to tell a Destiny story that’s captivating for all players, even those who may not be familiar with ten years of intricate lore. For the Destiny franchise to continue thriving for another ten years, it’s crucial that Bungie nails this release.
Fresh participants are essential for games that have been around for a while; as dedicated players gradually lose enthusiasm and depart, it’s crucial to maintain the game engaging and inviting for casual newcomers to keep live-service games thriving, and this applies to D2 as well. With fewer hardcore fans prepared to purchase expansion packs, regardless of their quality, Bungie cannot and should not rely solely on its past accomplishments.
Rather than simply maintaining Destiny, they need to continuously innovate and pay heed to player feedback to ensure its longevity. The release of Edge of Fate presents an excellent opportunity for them to demonstrate their dedication to revitalizing the cherished game, as well as their readiness to take bold steps to create a game that resonates with players and encourages repeat play.
