Despite the successful release of the critically praised “The Final Shape” for “Destiny 2” last year, Bungie faced some tough times with numerous layoffs. Interestingly, this expansion, which concluded over a decade’s worth of storytelling for the series, reportedly didn’t sell as well at launch as Lightfall, despite receiving more positive reviews.
A significant portion of this situation can be linked back to the negative impact Lightfall had on the franchise. Despite its strong sales figures and high player counts, it failed to meet fan expectations due to aspects like less engaging writing, a disjointed story arc leading up to the battle against The Witness, and lack of depth. Notably, Liana Ruppert, a former community manager and accessibility lead, shared on Twitter that the leadership aimed for the expansion to be unsuccessful.
It’s unfortunate that the leadership wanted it to fail, as there were numerous opportunities for Lightfall to be groundbreaking if the teams had been adequately supported. Despite this setback, I remain proud of everyone involved in the project. Speaking metaphorically, she compared herself to a frenzied Titan version of Spider-Man, stating that even with these challenges, it still ranks among the best (S-tier). This was her reaction to Paul Tassi’s comment on Forbes.
It’s puzzling why the leadership decided on the expansion’s downfall, but it’s generally agreed that quality plummeted significantly following “The Witch Queen.” This decline in quality is believed to have caused a drop in player engagement and popularity for the game, as Bungie fell short of their own financial expectations by 45 percent.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m right smack in the heart of Destiny 2’s Episode 3: Heresy, with Act 2 around the corner. Excitingly, there’s also a new expansion, codenamed Apollo, set to drop this Summer. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates in the upcoming months!
It’s unfortunate that the leadership didn’t provide adequate support for Lightfall, as there were countless opportunities for greatness. Nevertheless, I remain proud of everyone involved in the project. Continuing to soar through challenges like a manic titan, Spider-Man remains an exceptional hero 🫡
