Bungie has unveiled a fresh plan for Destiny 2, highlighting two upcoming expansions scheduled for release in 2025. Earlier in the year, Destiny 2: The Final Shape was unleashed, marking the conclusion of the “Light and Darkness Saga” that began with the first Destiny game. With the debut of The Final Shape, players were naturally curious about where Bungie would steer the shooter next. Now, we have a clearer picture of what’s to come in the future.
On Bungie’s website today, they shared a detailed update about the future direction of Destiny 2. One of the most significant points is their decision to roll out two expansions annually, instead of one large one. Starting from 2025, an expansion tentatively named Apollo will debut in summer, followed by Behemoth in winter 2025, which will lead into a substantial content release in spring 2026. This new approach is being referred to as Frontiers and will also include four free updates released each year.
Tyson Green, the director of Destiny 2, expressed that they have enjoyed crafting yearly expansions, particularly The Final Shape, but admitted that they consume most of their development resources. To focus on experimentation and innovation in delivering Destiny 2 content, they plan to shift from one large expansion annually to two medium-sized expansions every six months starting next year. These updates will deviate from the traditional single-campaign structure used since Shadowkeep, offering a chance to venture into fresh formats instead.
One feature Bungie intends to explore more in the upcoming ‘Apollo’ update is non-linear storytelling. This means players of ‘Destiny 2’ can tackle larger story elements in any order they prefer, leading to a unique experience for each player while ensuring everyone still gets access to the same content.
Previously, stories like “The Final Shape” followed a straightforward path from A to B to C to D. In contrast, “Codename: Apollo” offers a non-linear narrative structure where you’ll encounter multiple threads to explore and uncover. As such, when you arrive at our fresh destination, the story begins at A, but you get to decide your own path. You might choose to delve into C initially or try to access B before that, or perhaps investigate D first. The paths you don’t take right away won’t disappear – they’ll remain open for you to revisit and explore later on. It’s essential to do so because the more threads you uncover, the further the story unfolds, and reaching a specific number of threads will unlock the next chapter in the narrative.
The alterations in Destiny 2 are quite significant and could potentially be just what the game requires. Given that Bungie has faced several rounds of layoffs over the past year, largely due to Destiny 2’s underperformance, it seems they are trying to revamp their strategy for the online shooter genre to attract more players.
