In honor of the 80th anniversary of World War II, Kazuyoshi Takeda’s heart-wrenching and award-winning graphic novel, “Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise,” is being transformed into an animated film. Similar to Shigeru Mizuki’s “Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths” and Osamu Tezuka’s “Message to Adolf,” “Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise” is renowned as one of the exceptional manga that portray the atrocities of World War II.
Plans for an anime adaption titled “Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise” were initially revealed in 2021. Now, fans of the manga can rejoice as they’ve been given fresh details and even a sneak peek at the first teaser trailer for this upcoming anime movie, which also reveals its release date.
Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise Releases in December, 2025
In this upcoming anime movie based on “One Piece”, Toei Animation takes charge. Goro Kuji, known for his work as “Chained Soldier”, steps into directing for the first time. The script is being co-written by Kazuyoshi Takeda, the manga’s creator, and Junji Nishimura, a well-known writer from “Ranma 1/2”.
In the initial sneak peek for the upcoming movie, there wasn’t a lot shown concerning action sequences. Yet, it effectively hinted at the film’s grim atmosphere. The sounds of war cries, terrified shrieks, and final breaths of American and Japanese soldiers echo over gunfire and detonations, while the camera persistently lingers on the peaceful flora of the island. Furthermore, the trailer has confirmed that the movie Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise is set to debut in Japanese cinemas on December 5th. As for a US release date, it remains undisclosed as of now.
What Is Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise About?
The manga titled “Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise” is set in 1944, with the Second World War concluding the following year. This poignant manga portrays a brutal conflict involving countless American and Japanese troops, as narrated by a Japanese soldier named Tamaru.
On the island of Peleliu, a slice of heaven on Earth was where Tamaru, a skilled Japanese draftsman in civilian life, arrived during the summer of 1944. This idyllic location became a living nightmare as the American fleet chose to launch an invasion… Over 50,000 Japanese and American soldiers clashed around an airport that held strategic importance at the time. The American forces deployed approximately 40,000 elite troops, while the Japanese forces prepared with a force of about 10,000 soldiers, receiving orders to fight until their last breath.
Kazuyoshi Takeda’s comic book series, titled “Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise,” was published in Hakusensha’s monthly magazine for mature readers called Young Animal, starting with the first chapter in February 2016. The series concluded in April 2021. In 2017, this series received the Japan Cartoonists Association Excellence Award.
