It’s challenging to change a preliminary opinion about something, and this is applicable to both people and video games. For instance, when a game gains a particular label from gamers or the media, it becomes difficult to shed that image. This has certainly been the case for the game Palworld, which has been dubbed “Pokemon with guns” since its initial unveiling. This nickname has brought both positive and negative attention to the game over the past few years, but it seems the developers at Pocketpair aren’t particularly fond of it.
Last month at the Game Developers Conference, John “Bucky” Buckley from Pocketpair, both communications director and publishing manager, gave a speech. In this talk, Buckley shared valuable behind-the-scenes information about Palworld and future strategies of Pocketpair. According to IGN, during his speech, Buckley also discussed the longstanding perception among gaming journalists that Palworld resembles “Pokemon with guns,” an idea that has been around for quite some time.
In June of 2021, we introduced our game to the world, which was quite some time ago. We premiered a trailer at Indie Live Expo, an indie gaming event in Japan. Initially, we showcased it to the Japanese audience, and we received an incredibly positive response. However, within no time, Western media became aware of this small game, and we were swiftly labeled as part of a specific franchise, along with references to guns. This tag has persisted with us since then, despite our attempts to distance ourselves from it.
After the comments, Buckley provided more details to IGN, explaining that the initial concept of Palworld was somewhat similar to ARK: Survival Evolved. Just like ARK, this game features weapons and allows players to tame dinosaurs. However, Buckley emphasized that their aim was to make each creature unique in Palworld, making it stand out. Given this focus, it’s understandable how Palworld may have developed more from ARK than Pokemon. Although Pocketpair has grown accustomed to the comparison and even adapted to it in certain ways, Buckley encourages players to evaluate the game based on its own qualities rather than comparing it to Pokemon.
Initially, Buckley appeared taken aback by the tagline “Pokemon with guns,” but considering the game’s rapid acquisition of this label isn’t hard to understand. Beyond its gameplay mechanics, numerous designs within the game appear reminiscent of the Pokemon franchise, and it has been criticized for infringing on Nintendo and The Pokemon Company’s trademarks. Consequently, a joint lawsuit was filed over these similarities, and changes have already been made to Palworld, suggesting such accusations may hold some truth. Given these circumstances, it seems highly improbable that the “Pokemon with guns” label will be disappearing anytime in the near future!
