Devil May Cry Creator Has an Issue With JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

The action-packed game series Devil May Cry, which gained significant attention due to Adi Shankar’s anime adaptation on Netflix, actually originated on the PlayStation 2. Originating from the mind of game designer Hideki Kamiya, the Capcom franchise expanded to include five main games and countless other appearances in various titles. In a passionate outburst, Kamiya expressed some harsh criticism towards recent merchandise based on JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, believing it fell short of the high standards set by Hirohiko Araki, the creator of the original anime. It’s evident that the creator of Dante and Virgil holds his Joestar figures in high regard.

In his latest social media post, Kamiya expressed his disappointment over the new Joseph Joestar figure from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency. He stated that if it weren’t labeled as Joseph Joestar, he wouldn’t recognize the character. He compared it to a 3D figurine of a fan-made manga character drawn casually. Kamiya questioned the quality of this figure, released after the Super Action Statue, and expressed his dismay that it was produced in the Reiwa era. He found it disheartening that a beloved character’s figure turned out so poorly. Hideki’s thoughts did not stop there, as he continued to voice his frustration over the situation.

It seems like this is a “Joseph Joestar” that wasn’t written, but if it weren’t for that, I wouldn’t know who else it could be… Is this perhaps a three-dimensional representation of a fan-made manga based on someone’s hobby? It’s surprising that something like this came out after the creation of the moving image… In this Reiwa era… I wonder what happened… It’s too heartwarming to think that someone is transforming their favorite work into a 3D sculpture… Is it all right in the head…? What’s going on here…?

Dante’s Bizarre Adventure

The creator of Devil May Cry questioned if the depicted character was more aligned with the animated adaptation or the original content, as his criticisms persisted. He expressed, “Since I haven’t seen the anime, if someone claims, ‘This is extremely loyal to the anime version, it leaps off the screen! I’m definitely going to buy it!’ then my apologies… However, this depiction only diminishes my enthusiasm for watching the anime.

Reflecting on my past, I vividly remember the period when Hirohiko Araki was crafting Part 5 of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. At that time, a JoJo artbook made its way into the market. My excitement knew no bounds, and I immediately grabbed a copy. Upon opening it, I found a fold-out poster filled with illustrations of past JoJos and their arch-nemeses – characters like Kars and Wamuu. The depictions were so drastically different from what I had imagined that it left me utterly bewildered, as if I was looking at completely innocent children. I literally crumpled to the ground. This piece evokes a similar sensation…

Netflix’s Devil May Cry future

After the hit debut of Devil May Cry on Netflix’s animated series, the streaming platform swiftly announced that a second season was in development. Given how the first season concluded, with Dante left hanging due to being abducted by DarkCom, fans are hopeful that they won’t have a long wait for the show’s comeback. A sneak peek at the upcoming second season was accidentally released as an Evanescence music video from the series’ soundtrack showcased the footage.
