Devil May Cry Director Hideaki Itsuno Leaves Capcom

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experiences under my belt, this news about Hideaki Itsuno leaving Capcom after 30 years has left me both saddened and intrigued. I’ve been through the highs and lows of the Devil May Cry series, from the rocky start of Devil May Cry 2 to the redemption arc of Devil May Cry 3, all the way up to the recent masterpiece that was Devil May Cry 5.

One of Capcom’s highly respected game developers, Hideaki Itsuno, has decided to part ways with the company after more than three decades of service. This weekend, Itusno announced his departure via Twitter. Despite this move, fans can expect to see more of Itsuno’s creations in the future as he continues his career in game development outside of Capcom. At this time, Itsuno has not disclosed his next destination but plans to start working on a new project starting from September.

At the close of August 2024, Itsuo will bid farewell to Capcom after nearly three decades and five months. Thank you for your unwavering backing of the games and characters I’ve overseen throughout these years. I trust that you will carry on championing Capcom’s games and characters. Beginning in September, I’ll embark on a fresh journey, developing a new game within an entirely different landscape. Here’s to creating engaging, enchanting games that could match or even surpass the ones I’ve previously crafted thus far.

Itsuno has an impressive resume with Capcom. The director’s best known work at the company is undoubtedly the Devil May Cry series. Beginning on the franchise with Devil May Cry 2, Itsuno took over as the game’s replacement director, during a troubled production. Itsuno, not wanting the game to be his legacy on the series, asked Capcom if he could direct Devil May Cry 3 from the start. The game was able to win back fans after the struggles of Devil May Cry 2, and Itsuno would stay with the series through Devil May Cry 5.

Throughout his career, Itsuno has contributed significantly to numerous Capcom games, not only as a director but also in various other capacities. He was the main director for Dragon’s Dogma and its sequel, and co-directed the original Power Stone, later becoming the full director for Power Stone 2. The Power Stone series is highly respected among fighting game enthusiasts, so those who haven’t tried it yet should consider playing it when the upcoming Capcom Fighting Collection 2, set for release in 2025, becomes available.

As a devoted follower, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions following Itsuno’s announcement. On one hand, the thought of him departing from Capcom leaves me with a pang of sadness. Yet, on the other, I find myself brimming with curiosity and anticipation for what lies ahead. Regardless of the direction he takes next, it’s clear that many of us are eagerly waiting to dive into his future creations.
