Devil May Cry Director “Would Love To” Do a Remake

There’s enthusiasm among fans and even the creator himself, Hideki Kamiya, for the return of “Devil May Cry.” Although he has moved on from Capcom and PlatinumGames to establish his own studio and work on “Okami 2,” there’s a hint that he might be interested in revisiting Ebony and Ivory for another installment. During a recent Q&A, Kamiya expressed that if he were to return to the series, the game would likely take a new approach.

For those unacquainted, the Devil May Cry series, developed by Capcom, is a popular hack-and-slash action franchise. As Dante, you battle hordes of demons, showcasing both style and strength with your lethal arsenal. The five main games have kept fans captivated with their gruesome and wild tales about Dante, the hired gun, and his peculiar allies. Not too long ago, an animated series by Adi Shankar, who also worked on Castlevania, premiered on Netflix to generally positive feedback, setting the stage for a second season. Given the enthusiasm for more Devil May Cry, everyone’s been keeping tabs on Hideki Kamiya’s YouTube channel.

Hideki Kamiya “Would Love To” Do Devil May Cry for Capcom

In a recent YouTube post, Hideki Kamiya, the original creator of the series, hinted at a potential return for the franchise, using an expression that could be interpreted as bringing it back from the “underworld”. Accompanied by some lively discussion about the revival process, he also mentioned that if an opportunity arises, he would be thrilled to revisit the project. At approximately the 3 minutes and 42 seconds point, a YouTube commentator inquired about him creating a remake of Devil May Cry.

Regarding a potential remake of “Devil May Cry,” Kamiya expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “Given that we created it 24 years ago, I’d certainly be interested! However, I rarely replay my own games after they’re released. Even with Devil May Cry, I don’t usually go back to it. But when I see gameplay clips, I think, ‘This does feel like a game design from 24 years ago.’ With today’s technology and design methods, I’d love to reimagine it completely. If such a project were ever started…well, I don’t plan unless it’s actually happening, so for now, I have no specific ideas. But if the opportunity arises—I’ll be ready. So, Capcom, if you’re listening, please consider me for this project. And by the way, let’s also talk about Viewtiful Joe. Let’s remake that too!

It’s worth noting that the popular series was born from an early draft of Resident Evil 4. The concept and design were impressive, but not fitting for Resident Evil. Hideki Kamiya, known for his work on Resident Evil 2, Okami, and Viewtiful Joe, initially intended to work on RE4, but shifted his focus to this new project instead, which eventually became the series we’re familiar with today. A reboot of Devil May Cry occurred in 2013 under the title DmC: Devil May Cry, but it wasn’t well-received by fans and was largely overshadowed by returning to the original series with Devil May Cry 5 in 2019. If he returns, it might be quite different from what we’re accustomed to, but there’s no denying that fans would eagerly jump back into demon-slaying action once more.
