Devil Wears Prada musical star Vanessa Williams: ‘Don’t expect Meryl Streep’

As a seasoned theatre-goer who has witnessed the likes of Olivier and Tony Award-winning performances, I must say that the upcoming London production of “The Devil Wears Prada” musical is shaping up to be an absolute delight. With a powerhouse cast led by none other than Vanessa Williams as Miranda Priestly, this adaptation promises to bring a fresh, unique take on the iconic character.

In a different take, while Meryl Streep undoubtedly shone as the initial portrayal of the all-encompassing icon Miranda Priestly, come this fall, Vanessa Williams will prove herself as a fresh, new icy ruler.

As “The Devil Wears Prada” musical premiers in London this month, the actress from “Desperate Housewives” is unequivocally stating that her portrayal of the Fashion Editor is not based on the 2006 movie character.

She continued: “I’m me. I walk differently to Meryl Streep. I sing differently to Meryl Streep.

Instead of taking over someone else’s responsibilities, I was given the opportunity to develop a new role for myself, which feels much more thrilling.

“It’s delightful to have the freedom to deliver my lines as I prefer in this fresh musical, which will make its debut on London’s West End for the very first time.

Indeed, Meryl Streep might be taking on her character Miranda Priestly once more in a potential Devil Wears Prada follow-up, which is reportedly under discussion at Disney. This could potentially lead to an exciting power struggle between these two characters over the Runway magazine.

Actress America Ferrera, known for playing Ugly Betty, later commended her wardrobe team, led by costume designer Gregg Barnes, for aiding her in gaining the self-assurance required to tackle the part.

“The wardrobe is crucial to Miranda.

When I don those garments and slip into those footwear, there’s an instant transformation. You stand a bit taller, exude confidence, and embody the part with a refined elegance that meets expectations.

Although Williams aims to add her unique touch to the well-received or controversial character, it was hinted by Kate Wetherhead, the writer of the musical’s book and screenplay, that several memorable lines from the movies have been incorporated into the script.

“Some of the quotes are baked into the songs and we’ve found different ways to use them.”

When prompted to suggest a few examples, she opted for timeless humor with the quote from Miranda, “Has something happened to my coffee? Did she pass away?” Also, she jokingly mentioned the Emily Blunt quip, “I’m just one bout of food poisoning away from my target weight.

She added: “What I get to do is the match the tone of that. Any dialogue I write has to live alongside the lines we know and love.”

The musical adaptation of “The Devil Wears Prada” will make its London debut, following early performances at Theatre Royal Plymouth.

As a film enthusiast, I can confidently say that the star-studded lineup of this upcoming movie is enough to make any Tucci or Hathaway devotee’s heart skip a beat. With Olivier Award winner Matt Henry stepping into the role of Nigel, and the legendary Jerry Mitchell at the helm for directing and choreography – best known for Kinky Boots, Hairspray, and Legally Blonde, it’s clear that this movie is in capable hands. To top it all off, the music is penned by none other than Sir Elton John himself, with production handled by his partner David Furnish. It promises to be a cinematic masterpiece, and I can hardly wait!

In the upcoming musical, we’ll have some exciting new talents gracing the stage for their West End debuts. Georgie Buckland will be portraying the character of Andy, while Amy Di Bartolomeo, a notable figure from Six, takes on the role of Emily.
