Warning: Spoilers for the final episode of Dexter: Original Sin season 1! The first season of Dexter: Original Sin has concluded, and it sets up an intriguing foundation for future seasons. While the original series of Dexter (2006-2013) explored various aspects of Dexter Morgan’s life, from his father’s complex history to his secret sibling, as well as how he became a ‘moral’ serial killer, it’s not accurate to say that there was widespread demand for a prequel. Instead, the series was greenlit due to Dexter Morgan’s untimely end in Dexter: New Blood.
Showtime didn’t let the fact that Dexter had died stop them from finding a way to revive him for a follow-up series titled “Dexter: Resurrection“. While this is undoubtedly exciting news for many fans, the prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin” served as an enjoyable starter that delighted viewers with its engaging cast, clever dialogue, and unexpected plot twists. As it happens, there’s a lot more to uncover about Dexter and his family/coworkers, and it seems likely that this will lead to several new seasons that shed light on events before the original series.
Dexter: Original Sin Ending Explained
It came as quite a surprise to many viewers when they found out a few weeks back that Captain Aaron Spencer is the chief antagonist in Dexter: Original Sin. This revelation suggests that Dexter isn’t the only or first killer in Miami Metro, which could present an intriguing challenge for him since he’s still mastering the art of vigilantism. To put it simply, the tenth episode of Dexter: Original Sin, titled “Code Blues”, starts off with Dexter trailing Spencer to a deserted ship where he has hidden his son, Nicky.
In a brief skirmish, Dexter and Spencer clash, leading to Spencer triggering an emergency flood in the room where Nicky is held as a means of escape. This predicament puts Dexter in a difficult position: Save Nicky or pursue Spencer. Ultimately, he opts for saving Nicky by signaling the police with a flare, allowing them to rescue him. Following this, Dexter resumes his pursuit of the captain. Eventually, he tracks down Spencer at his ex-wife’s residence, where he is trying to harm her. It turns out that Nicky is the product of an affair between Spencer’s ex-wife and her current husband. In the end, Dexter manages to overpower Spencer before any further harm can be done, and takes him out on Camilla’s boat in the sea.
In another part of the story, Spencer subtly hints that there might be more to his past than what’s apparent due to Harry’s relationship with someone, but Dexter ends up killing him before any additional information is uncovered. Meanwhile, in a different sequence within the same episode, Harry delves into the murder of Barb, a social worker who separated Brian Moser from the Morgan family when he was young. Harry manages to connect the dots and confronts Brian on a roof, where Brian had been observing his own crime scene, anticipating Dexter’s arrival.
As a film enthusiast, I find myself face-to-face with Brian, discussing his fixation on Dexter. I urge him to let go, believing it’s for the best. However, Brian lashes out, blaming me for all the turmoil he’s endured. He accuses me of orchestrating everything that’s transpired between us. In a twist of events, I manage to convince him, albeit reluctantly, that I might be his savior rather than his tormentor. Enraged, Brian retaliates by knocking me unconscious before slipping away to evade arrest. The night ends chaotically, but luckily for me, Bobby Watt regains consciousness from his coma, enabling my departure to seek much-needed solace at home.
Upon returning home, Dexter finds Harry engrossed in the news, reporting on Nicky’s arrest and the revelation of his father as the kidnapper. Harry grants Dexter a moment to feel vindicated, but voices his regret for not letting his son intervene earlier. Dexter then admits to having killed Spencer and rescuing Nicky himself, actions that his father acknowledges as proof that the code is functioning effectively. He also praises Dexter for saving a life while managing his dark impulses.
At a later point, Dexter, Deborah, and Harold decide to dine out for lunch. During this meal, Deborah confesses that she declined a scholarship at Florida State University to attend the police academy, inspired by Tanya, LaGuerta, and Camilla. As they continue their discussions about a future where Dexter can utilize his code ethically before joining Deborah on the dance floor, Harold and Dexter engage in plotting. On the outside of the restaurant, Brian keeps a vigil, watching the family have fun while he broods in sadness.
How Dexter: Original Sin Sets Up Season 2
The story in “Dexter: Original Sin” unfolds approximately fifteen years before the commencement of the initial series, thereby offering ample opportunity to explore fresh narratives. At the onset of “Dexter,” there are numerous blood trails and submerged bodies in the ocean, providing Dexter with a multitude of potential victims to target. As such, “Original Sin” effectively lays the groundwork for future episodes. If Showtime chooses not to produce a second season, which seems unlikely given the show’s remarkable ratings, it would be an unfortunate decision as this prequel helps set up the original series nicely.
Deb is progressing towards a police career, Dexter is following a sinister path of vigilante justice, and Brian is lurking with the intention of attacking Dexter at the right moment. If they decide to continue with a second season, here’s how things could unfold on-screen. Firstly, it would be intriguing to watch Deb rise through the police ranks. As viewers remember, she began the initial series undercover as a sex worker in Vice before moving to homicide. This background may generate compelling stories that highlight her struggles.
In a future season of Dexter: Original Sin, it’s expected that we’ll delve into Harry’s story, particularly his suicide, from his point of view. It seems the circumstances surrounding his death might not be as straightforward as we initially assumed. Moreover, since Brian Moser has been revealed to have been present all along in Dexter: Original Sin, there’s a possibility that he could have somehow caused Harry’s demise to clear the path for himself.
It’s uncertain at this point if Brian will appear again in upcoming seasons, but he might make occasional appearances as he evolves into his new persona, Rudy Cooper. We don’t know yet whether Brian will continue to kill people before transforming into the Ice Truck Killer on Dexter: Original Sin, but a significant timeframe exists where his actions are unexplained. As of now, there’s no official confirmation about season two of Dexter: Original Sin, but it’s probable that we’ll hear something soon if it’s in the works.
