As a film enthusiast who’s spent countless hours immersed in the world of serial killers and their silver screen counterparts, I must say that Dexter: Original Sin has truly outdone itself with its third episode. The way they’ve woven in the American Psycho Easter egg from the original series and expanded upon it is nothing short of masterful storytelling.
“Beware! The content of this post may reveal plot points from the third episode of Dexter: Original Sin currently available on Paramount+. Proceed with caution if you don’t want any spoilers!
In the original Dexter TV series, the Easter egg related to American Psycho has gained additional significance due to the backstory provided in Dexter: Original Sin. With nearly 20 years on air, Dexter is one of the most popular shows, and even with occasional breaks, it remains relevant as new viewers discover it on streaming platforms. The show’s enduring popularity led to a revival called Dexter: New Blood in 2021, and now, a prequel series that has set records for Showtime. Last week, its pilot episode broke Showtime’s viewership records.
In a thrilling turn of events, Dexter: Original Sin served up two fresh episodes this past week. However, there’s a small hiccup – a brief hiatus is on the horizon during the season. But until then, enjoy every moment! The new episodes give Dexter: Original Sin a chance to really strut its stuff, as the first episode essentially revisited some flashbacks from the original series (with a tantalizing glimpse of Dexter: Resurrection), while these two are entirely new and delve deeper into Dexter’s second victim. Meanwhile, they also offer insights into how Dexter developed some of his signature traits, like the distinctive cheek slash on his victims, and shed light on one of his aliases.
Dexter: Original Sin – Dexter’s American Psycho/Patrick Bateman Alias Explained
In the original “Dexter” series, Dexter frequently assumed various false identities to ensure his victims remained unaware of his true self and to shield those close to him. Examples include Kyle Butler, Daryl Tucker, Arthur Curry, and Jim Lindsay from “Dexter: New Blood.” These are merely a few of the personas he adopted, but one that stands out to aficionados of serial killer narratives is Patrick Bateman. Bateman is the lead character in “American Psycho,” famously portrayed by Christian Bale. It has been announced that “American Psycho” will be reimagined with Austin Butler taking on the role of Bateman. This character is a wealthy, narcissistic serial killer who consistently feigns his way through life. In the first season, one of Dexter’s victims is identified by Miami Metro and Masuka, who discovers a needle mark in her neck. Upon conducting a drug test, he reveals traces of M99, a potent animal tranquilizer, in her system.
The drug is tightly regulated and can only be bought with a legitimate DEA permit; it turns out that Dexter’s name appears on this list, but under the alias of Patrick Bateman. Typically, this would just be an amusing Easter egg, but Dexter: Original Sin suggests that Dexter shares an affection for American Psycho. Naturally, at the time when the show takes place in 1991, the movie wouldn’t have been released yet, so his fondness would stem from the book. In the opening scene of Original Sin, as Dexter poses for a photo, the photographer instructs him to think about something joyful. Instantly, he visualizes an edition of the American Psycho novel and smiles.
In episode 3, Dexter takes his deception a notch higher. As he sets out to spy on his second target, Tony Ferrer, Dexter fabricates a false identity for himself. He then approaches Masuka with the request of creating a fake ID, claiming he intends to use it for partying. When asked for details, Dexter reveals he wants to adopt the alias Patrick Bateman. Given his affinity for the novel “American Psycho”, it’s plausible that Dexter’s connection to the character will persist once he starts using M99, since we know he eventually obtains a DEA license under the Bateman name. However, when that might happen is uncertain at this point.
At this moment, it’s uncertain whether “Dexter: Original Sin” will have a second season, but a follow-up series named “Dexter: Resurrection” is scheduled for release in 2025. Currently, details about the sequel are scarce, but it continues from where “New Blood” left off and brings back Michael C. Hall as the Bay Harbor Butcher. The original series has a brief introduction that paves the way for Hall’s comeback, however, we’re yet to learn how the sequel will develop beyond that point.
Trustworthy gossip hints at the upcoming series titled “Dexter: Resurgence” being set in New York City and boasting the return of popular figures such as Harry Morgan and Harrison. Furthermore, numerous reliable sources have suggested that the series, “Dexter: Resurgence“, will introduce Peter Dinklage as a malevolent character, with Uma Thurman rumored to portray his associate. Details about their characters remain scarce for now, but we eagerly await more information in the near future.
