Spoiler alert: I’m diving into the seventh episode of Dexter: Original Sin! After six episodes of intrigue and suspense, Dexter: Original Sin has finally unmasked the mastermind behind the chaos – a revelation that left me stunned. This television franchise, one of the most acclaimed starting back in 2006, is a powerhouse with eight seasons under its belt and concluding in 2013. The original series’ ending was met with controversy and dissatisfaction from fans. Yet, it left room for potential continuation by Showtime. Despite discussions about reviving the series almost immediately after its conclusion, it took nearly a decade before Dexter returned to our screens once more.
2021 saw Michael C. Hall reprise his role as Dexter Morgan in the mini-series “Dexter: New Blood,” which attracted a massive audience. Regrettably, Showtime’s record-breaking viewership for “New Blood” was short-lived since the series was designed for just one season. With Dexter’s character being written off at the end, Showtime sought ways to prolong the series in some form. This led to the creation of “Dexter: Original Sin,” a prequel series that delves into Dexter’s first murder and his early years as an emerging serial killer. The show has been well-received by fans, providing Showtime with the commercial success they aim for while also preparing the groundwork for a follow-up series called “Dexter: Resurrection,” set to debut this summer and currently in production since earlier this month.
Meanwhile, Showtime is wrapping up the inaugural season of the Dexter prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin. Following a brief break in production for the same, the show has resumed with some intriguing twists. The seventh episode, titled “The Big Bad Body Problem,” finds Dexter grappling with the body of his third victim, whose discovery by police marks him as a serial killer. Simultaneously, he delves into a fresh clue related to the child kidnapper/killer tormenting Miami Metro and its police captain, Aaron Spencer. True to form, Dexter swiftly deduces the true identity of this individual, which sends him on a downward spiral.
Who Is The Killer in Dexter: Original Sin?
Towards the finale of episode seven in Dexter: Original Sin, Dexter starts piecing together clues regarding the true identity of the main antagonist. Earlier, Spencer’s abducted child, Nicky, manages to sharpen an item and uses it to slice the kidnapper’s hand during their struggle. In retaliation, the kidnapper amputates one of Nicky’s fingers and sends it in a box to Miami Metro, leaving Spencer heartbroken. As Dexter assists in examining the severed finger, he spots a bloodstain on the outside of the container that doesn’t seem to match the finger’s origin. Eventually, he deduces that the blood probably belongs to the kidnapper himself, potentially leading him closer to unmasking the villain.
Later on, Spencer expresses gratitude to Dexter for his efforts, but unintentionally exposes a wound identical to the one the kidnapper has. Although Dexter isn’t fully aware of the situation, this detail makes him wary that Aaron Spencer might be the culprit. As we observe Spencer purchasing the same frozen meals that the killer has been stocking up for his victims, he mentions to the cashier that “his son enjoys them.” Given these clues, it’s evident that Spencer is likely the main antagonist of this season. However, we are still left wondering why Spencer is kidnapping and tormenting his own child, and what led him to murder Jimmy Powell. These aspects of the plot remain unclear for now.
The enigmatic reason behind his actions remains unclear, but fans have long suspected Spencer. This suspicion may be partially alleviated by the fact that Captain Matthews from the original Dexter series might be brought in. By the end of Original Sin season one, it seems likely that Spencer will be defeated, creating a vacancy for Miami Metro’s captain position, which Matthews could fill. Given the evident camaraderie between Matthews and Dexter’s father, it makes sense for Matthews to be introduced before Harry meets his end.
Dexter: Original Sin Confirms Dexter Was Not Miami Metro’s First (Or Only) Killer
A significant turn of events in “Dexter: Original Sin” is that Dexter isn’t Miami Metro’s first serial killer, as Captain Spencer was a sinister presence within the Homicide department. This is particularly striking because when Doakes is suspected of being the Bay Harbor Butcher, everyone is shocked, implying that they were unaware of Spencer’s true nature. This could mean that Spencer’s secret was never exposed to the public or the police station, as it wasn’t discussed in the original series.
Additionally, there’s a touch of irony since Patrick Dempsey portrayed a law enforcement officer who turned out to be a serial killer in “Thanksgiving.” However, it appears unlikely that he will reappear in season two of “Dexter: Original Sin,” unless somehow Dexter manages to imprison him or drive him away forever.
