As a devoted cinephile, let me share an exciting tidbit about “Dexter: Original Sin.” This gripping series, still captivating audiences decades after its debut, boasts a fleeting appearance by one of the original series’ iconic villains. With its recent re-emergence on Netflix last summer, it’s no wonder that a fresh wave of viewers, who might not have been born when it first aired, discovered this captivating tale.
Growing up with thrilling narratives like “Daredevil” and “The Punisher,” it’s hardly surprising that the new generation was drawn to “Dexter,” a series that shares many similarities with these superhero stories. But every hero needs a formidable foe, and in this case, the villains are equally compelling.
I must say, Dexter truly cemented its reputation with the gripping drama as its titular character faced off against seasonal adversaries. Actors like John Lithgow, Clancy Brown, and soon-to-be Uma Thurman in “Dexter: Resurrection,” along with many others, delivered remarkable performances as villains during Dexter’s TV run. Last week, the main antagonist for the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin was unveiled, and another esteemed actor has joined the cast to bring this character to life. Unfortunately, due to Dexter’s villains often meeting a grisly end by season’s end, it seems unlikely we’ll see this actor in potential future seasons of the series. However, Dexter: Original Sin is already laying groundwork for future adversaries.
Dexter: Original Sin Features a Cameo from Miguel Prado
In the eighth episode of “Dexter: Original Sin,” entitled “Business & Pleasure,” Harry embarks on an independent mission to track down the alleged NHI (No Human Identity) killer. Determined investigator Maria LaGuerta decides to accompany him beyond Miami, leading to a short journey. On the occasion of picking up LaGuerta, she exits her home simultaneously with a well-dressed man, who later turns out to be Miguel Prado, an individual aiming for district attorney position. Eventually, Miguel Prado emerges as one of Dexter’s most formidable adversaries.
In the third season of Dexter, Miguel Prado’s brother meets an unfortunate death at Dexter’s hands, unintentionally. Seeking vengeance against whom he believes is the culprit, Prado encounters Dexter in the act. Eventually, Dexter reveals his vigilante identity to Miguel, who becomes eager to join forces. However, Miguel’s self-centered desires prove too strong to control, causing complications for Dexter and forcing him to take drastic measures against Miguel, who eventually becomes a problematic foe. Jimmy Smits delivers an outstanding performance as Miguel, making him one of Dexter’s most memorable villains so far.
Absolutely, Miguel Prado appears to be significantly younger in “Dexter: Original Sin,” hence he isn’t portrayed by Smitts. However, his brief appearance serves as a clever wink to the complex relationship between LaGuerta and Miguel that was frequently referenced in the original series. In the original show, they had a clandestine affair, and it appears their romantic history might be a factor here. It’s uncertain if Prado will have a larger role in “Dexter: Original Sin,” considering he doesn’t interact with Dexter until the third season of the original show. Yet, there’s potential for more subtle cameos throughout the series.
Viewers of Dexter: Original Sin are well aware that there’s more than one villain hinted at in episode 8. In the same series, it is revealed that Brian Moser, also known as the Ice Truck Killer, is also the NHI (Not Her Identity) killer. This unexpected revelation has left viewers stunned, particularly since this storyline seems to run parallel to the main plot in the show. Interestingly, the Ice Truck Killer does not cross paths with Dexter until season 1, but it’s apparent that he had been tracking him for many years before that, and it’s likely that Harry will conceal any signs of his existence during Original Sin.
It’s uncertain if any additional Dexter villains will feature in Dexter: Original Sin. The Trinity Killer might be hinted at due to his extensive history of serial killing before the fourth season of the initial show, but it seems improbable that others would appear because they’d either be too young or not active enough to be mentioned. Still, it’s intriguing to observe how Dexter: Original Sin weaves connections back to the original series through its numerous easter eggs.
