At the DICE gaming convention last year, I found myself among the throng of gamers listening intently as Rod Fergusson, the boss at Diablo 4, shared some exciting news. He revealed that the upcoming expansion for our beloved game, scheduled to unfold after the Vessel of Hatred, is expected to hit shelves in 2026.
This news, as of now, hasn’t been disclosed via Blizzard’s formal communication outlets; instead, it was leaked by journalist Jason Schreier at the event he’s covering on BlueSky.
It’s official —Diablo 4’s second expansion launching in 2026
It might be a shock to numerous Diablo 4 enthusiasts who have pondered if the supposed multiple expansions would adhere to an annual release timeline. After Diablo 4’s debut in June 2024, the initial expansion, Vessel of Hatred, was revealed at BlizzCon 2023 and hit the shelves in October 2024.
Despite leaving some players craving more content, the game titled Vessel of Hatred concluded its story campaign too swiftly. Many critics, including us in our Vessel of Hatred review, pointed out that it ended suddenly, right when it seemed to build up speed. Fans anticipating an expansion in 2025 to further develop the narrative might be disheartened by the announcement of a release in 2026 instead.
The prolonged delay in release also stirs apprehension among those eagerly anticipating fresh classes, especially a character type such as the Paladin resembling a sword-and-shield archetype. If Blizzard persists in linking new classes solely to story updates—as they did with the Spiritborn class—players may find themselves waiting even more for their preferred innovations.
2026 could be good news
Initially, I felt disappointed by this news, but I’m looking forward to seeing where the story goes next. Delaying the next expansion to 2026 could possibly turn out to be a beneficial move. In earlier communications from Blizzard, there were suggestions of significant yearly content updates. However, Vessel of Hatred received criticism upon its release, with many fans feeling that they should have gotten more for its $40 price tag.
From my perspective, I thought the increased cost was compensated by the inclusion of an entirely new map area and the debut of the Spiritborn class. Yet, the abbreviated story mode left some gamers yearning for more due to its incomplete narrative. Blizzard, however, has grander designs for Mephisto, possibly unveiling his contentious battle as a Tortured Boss. This extended development period for the upcoming expansion implies that Blizzard might be working towards providing a more substantial offering, potentially resolving fan demands and enhancing the experience, thereby making it worth the delay.
