Did DC Just CLONE Nightwing?! You Won’t Believe What Happened!

The partnership between Batman and Robin (Dick Grayson) is arguably the most renowned and significant duo in all of comic books. Robin, being the initial superhero sidekick, kickstarted the trend of older heroes adopting younger partners who were intended to take over eventually. Dick Grayson has been an integral part of Batman’s story since nearly the start, debuting in Detective Comics #38. Despite moving on to become Nightwing, Batman and Robin have remained as close as fathers and sons can be, frequently teaming up to confront threats that only they can handle. However, the good old days might now pose a problem. Present-day Robin (Dick Grayson) has encountered his future self, clad in blue and black.

In a recent turn of events, the super-smart and telepathic gorilla Gorilla Grodd has gained the abilities of Martian Manhunter. This development is troubling enough, but Grodd has also enlisted the assistance of Justice League Unlimited member Air Wave. Using this aid, he’s journeyed back in time to gather his Legion of Doom allies when they were at their most villainous. He’s transported them to the future, where they aim to defeat the heroes of the DC Universe for good in the “We Are Yesterday” narrative. This tale is unfolding across a crossover between the Justice League Unlimited and Batman/Superman: World’s Finest comic series.

How Robin Got Launched Through Time

Following the assembly of his nefarious team and revealing his intention to defeat the heroes at some point in time, Grodd instructed his accomplices that they must seize sufficient tachyon energy from diverse time travel devices scattered globally. The group split up: Bizarro, Lex Luthor, and Captain Cold targeted the Cosmic Treadmill belonging to the Flash in Central City; Scarecrow and Joker planned to pilfer Carter Nicholas’s Time Ray; lastly, Sinstro, Cheeta, and Black Manta aimed to subdue the Atom to obtain Professor Hyatt’s Time Pool.

In this scenario, when the world’s elite heroes learn about an onslaught of attacks, they retaliate swiftly. Superman teams up with the Flash, Batman, and Robin to tackle their individual adversaries, while Plastic Man and Green Lantern are summoned to protect the Atom. However, the Legion of Doom manages to amass sufficient tachyon energy. To make matters worse, during the conflict, a Time Ray blast intended for Batman strikes Robin instead, hurling him through the time-stream. The Justice League rallies to confront the Legion, but then Gorilla Grodd unveils his hidden weapon: Pythoness, a new villain who uses her sorcery to mislead the heroes and Cheetah into believing Catwoman is responsible for this ordeal. Consequently, they abandon their feline ally as they race towards the future. This leaves them completely unprepared for the Legion’s surprise attack on their future-day.

On the concluding chapters of the narrative, Robin makes a return to the contemporary Watchtower. Upon entering, he encounters both Batman and Nightwing.

Time For a Robin/Nightwing Team Up

It’s worth noting that Robin has been transported through time in the comic series World’s Finest before, but this instance is different because he’s not only in the future, but he’s also encountered his own future self. This opens up an opportunity for Robin to discover more about the man he will grow into, and how his bond with Batman may evolve as they both age. Currently, their relationship is strong, but there was a period when tension ran high between Dick Grayson (Robin) and Bruce Wayne (Batman). This strain in their friendship primarily stemmed from Bruce’s protective instincts and his ongoing grief over the death of Jason Todd. This rift ultimately led Dick to relinquish the Robin identity and adopt the Nightwing persona, which he modeled after stories of Superman’s Kryptonian heroism that he heard.

During this event, Robin will get an opportunity to understand Nightwing’s future, which might not match his expectations but could still be exciting. This could provide Nightwing a platform to either discuss past issues or prepare for what’s next. Having two Dick Graysons is sure to create chaos, affecting everyone from villains to Batman and potentially themselves. But, it could also result in an amazing team-up since no one knows you better than yourself. It would be intriguing if Robin stays in the present for a while, especially as Damian Wayne plans to leave, but this situation is temporary, lasting only until the end of the crossover. However, it’s guaranteed to be thrilling while it lasts!
