Differences Between Oblivion and Skyrim
Individuals who played Oblivion after Skyrim, might find a few unexpected differences. The fundamental aspects of Oblivion differ significantly from those of Skyrim. For instance, the combat system, NPC interaction mini-game, and notoriety system are unique to Oblivion, as they are absent in Skyrim. Additionally, the structure of guild quests varies greatly between the two games. In Skyrim, the Dragonborn usually finds guild quests within a single headquarters and then embarks on missions across Skyrim to complete them, whereas in Oblivion, the quests are often scattered throughout the game world.
In Oblivion, the structure of the guilds varies; usually, each significant city has a specific guild hall for every guild. To become a part of these guilds, the Hero of Kvatch must accomplish tasks at each guild hall first. Each city’s guild hall offers a unique storyline before granting full membership.
Oblivion’s Arena Storyline
A significant additional mission in the game Oblivion is the Imperial City’s Colosseum, where players can fight their way up through the ranks until they earn the title of the Colosseum’s Grand Champion. This Colosseum operates similarly to the guild questlines in Oblivion, but it’s only located within the Imperial City. Originally, the storyline for the Colosseum in Oblivion was designed to function more like the other guilds. Each of the main cities in Oblivion was intended to have its own colosseum. The Hero of Kvatch would compete at each city’s colosseum, eventually becoming its champion, before progressing to the Imperial City Colosseum.
Why Oblivion’s Other Arenas Were Cut
The Benefits of a Longer Arena Storyline
This method could’ve expanded the Arena saga significantly, making it more complex and immersive than the eventual questline found in Oblivion. As demonstrated with guild storylines, this would have introduced additional characters, deepened the lore, and provided the player with greater achievements upon reaching the arena in Imperial City.
The plan to incorporate an arena in each city was abandoned due to limitations in available resources. Building the necessary infrastructure for arenas across all cities, complete with NPC characters and dialogue, turned out to be too heavy on resources for Oblivion. Consequently, the arena questline was confined to the Imperial City. This decision might not have been entirely negative, as having an arena in every city could have made the questline excessively repetitive. Additionally, it could have placed a significant strain on resources, potentially causing Oblivion to run slowly or consume too many system resources.
