Following Bobby’s departure, many fans of the series find themselves yearning for his return, as the relationship that was once teased now seems uncertain. Similarly, every viewer’s preferences make it challenging to establish a definitive ranking of the best episodes of 9-1-1. Yet, there are certain points on which fans can find common ground, and one such point is the strong desire for a particular 9-1-1 romance to unfold.

The latest season has proven challenging for fans, with events like Maddie’s gruesome throat slitting on 9-1-1 making it harder to bear. Since then, the storylines have taken a turn for the worse, as Bobby passed away, Chimney came close to falling off a building due to heavy drinking, and Buck nearly left the 118 team because he struggled with Bobby’s death without Eddie nearby. For those who had hoped that Buck might develop feelings for Eddie, things didn’t unfold quite as expected.

Regrettably, such a development seems less likely after the season’s end, with hints that this storyline could be more distant than ever before.

Although it’s never explicitly stated that Buck is planning to leave Eddie’s place, his actions suggest otherwise. He’s been on the hunt for new living arrangements and casually mentions that Eddie’s house never really felt like home to him – a statement not typically made about a place you intend to share with someone for the long haul. It seems Buck might harbor feelings for Eddie, but he doesn’t appear ready to acknowledge them publicly yet, and there are numerous other factors preventing them from becoming a couple.

Interestingly, it was revealed five seasons later that Buck, after splitting up with Abby, came to understand his sexuality as bisexual. This new realization made him reconsider his past relationships, particularly with Tommy.

In terms of how they initially met, Buck appears to have some questionable aspects. The details of their first date remain unclear, but it’s revealed that Eddie’s reaction to Buck revealing his orientation was what convinced fans they were a perfect match. However, Eddie only states that their relationship won’t be affected by Buck’s sexuality, which suggests they may not be romantically involved. This becomes even more apparent when considering the actors’ statements on the matter.

Buck Needs To Explore His Sexuality More Casually Right Now

A compilation of Buck’s romantic interests on paper can help understand his sexual orientation more clearly, but he largely concealed it until the seventh season. If Oliver Stark’s comments to Deadline are any guide, it appears that his character Buck isn’t quite ready for a relationship with Eddie at this point in time, as expressed by him directly.

When discussing potential directions for the story, I believe it’s not wise to simply cater to fans. Ideally, if we go in that direction, it should be because it aligns with the right narrative and character development.

As a cinephile, I’m eager to share that in the storyline, I don’t want my character, Buck, to end up with Eddie, not because of any romantic inclinations, but due to the potential misconception it might create about my sexuality. It appears Ryan Guzman (Eddie) shares similar sentiments, as he seems uncomfortable with the idea of a romance between our characters too. In fact, Guzman feels that Eddie and Buck have already established a strong bond without needing further development. Additionally, speaking to Deadline, Guzman expressed:

It seems to me that the bond we’ve built is truly authentic, and Oliver himself has expressed this sentiment frequently. In essence, I wonder why we can’t simply be friends, like brothers. For now, it appears that things are as they should be.

It’s clear to me why fans are drawing these conclusions, as they have developed their own narrative around the show. I’ve noticed countless interpretations where the characters are portrayed as friends and the show as a whole is seen from various perspectives. I find it fascinating. They are deeply invested in their interpretation of 9-1-1.

To put it simply, Guzman isn’t fundamentally against his character starting a romance with Buck. The main concern is that he doesn’t envision the characters having a romantic relationship in the storyline. While there might be fan interpretations of the series like 9-1-1 where this occurs, it’s not Guzman’s portrayal. As both actors seem to favor maintaining a strong friendship between the characters, it’s doubtful they will enter a romantic relationship. Nevertheless, it’s intriguing to witness their friendship evolve on its own merit.
