Did the New Superman Villain’s Secret Identity Get Accidentally Revealed?

In George Reeves’ portrayal of Clark Kent in The Adventures of Superman, as well as Christopher Reeve’s version in Superman: The Movie, Superman demonstrates the art of concealing his true identity. However, in James Gunn’s movie titled Superman featuring David Corenswet, there emerges another character with a hidden identity to match – the Hammer of Boravia, one of the DC Universe’s new villains.

In various sources, including the movie’s toyline and a photograph from the Daily Planet set, the armored hero of Boravia has been confirmed. However, no information is available about who is playing the high-tech villain seen fighting Superman in the trailers. The same applies to Ultraman, another masked figure dressed in a disguise, who seems to be working with General Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) and Superman’s adversary, Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult).

Just as the true actor behind Ultraman remains hidden, similar to the legendary Hammer of Boravia, there’s a hint that suggests a potential spoiler: the Hammer of Boravia might actually be Ultraman himself, hidden within its form.

An examination of the latest collection of Funko POP! figures based on Superman’s second wave – first revealed by ComicBook – reveals two figures: one wielding Hammer of Boravia and another limited-edition chase variant called Ultraman, numbered 583. This implies that these two characters are the same individual but wearing different outfits, as compared to Mr. Terrific (numbered 584) and Guy Gardner Green Lantern (numbered 585).

The recently released Superman teaser suggests a link between the Hammer of Boravia and Ultraman: there’s a scene where Superman seems to use an “ocular energy blast” on the LordTech facility, reminiscent of his heat vision. In the comics, Ultraman is essentially a malevolent version of Superman with similar abilities, including his fiery red eyes and heat vision. Furthermore, Ultraman is depicted alongside Luthor and another powerful meta-human, Angela Spica/the Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría), as they infiltrate Kal-El’s Fortress of Solitude in the arctic, suggesting that Luthor may be connected to the Hammer of Boravia.

It’s no secret: Gunn has indeed revealed that Lex Luthor will be the primary antagonist in the upcoming Superman movie. The director, in a post on Threads, clarified that while there have been rumors about Ultraman being Superman’s evil counterpart, it is actually Lex Luthor who will be the main villain of this film.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that “Superman” featuring David Corenswet portraying Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as the Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, with Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Neva Howell, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Frank Grillo – is exclusively hitting the big screen on July 11. Don’t miss out!
