Sean “Diddy” Combs‘ legal team is getting a little smaller.
In preparation for the rap mogul’s upcoming trial in May, charged with sex trafficking, his lawyer, Anthony Ricco, has asked to step down from the case respectfully and regretfully, as stated in documents acquired by NBC News.
In a document submitted on February 21st, attorney Ricco expressed his desire to step down from representing Sean Combs. He stated that due to certain circumstances, he could no longer provide effective legal service in accordance with the ethical standards for criminal justice as set by the American Bar Association (ABA).
In his motion, he pointed out that even though he understands the Local Rule demands detailed reasons for a lawyer’s withdrawal request supported by an affidavit or other means, there are compelling reasons (due to attorney-client privilege) for brevity in his application to step down as counsel in this case.
In my professional opinion as a lifestyle expert, I want to clarify that even though the rapper is currently facing charges related to racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation for prostitution, he will still have solid legal representation. Specifically, five additional attorneys, who are already on record, will continue to stand by his side in court. He has pleaded not guilty to these allegations.
If this request to step down as legal representation is approved, it won’t cause any changes to the current timeline for jury selection, the start of the trial, or the deadlines for addressing pre-trial legal matters.
Although he acknowledged talking about the matter with Mark Agnifilio, Ricco declined to provide additional details regarding his choice to step away from the case.
TopMob News has reached out to Ricco and Combs’ legal team for comment and has not heard back.
A new development transpired a week following when Combs initiated legal action against NBCUniversal. This move was prompted after their streaming service, Peacock, premiered the Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy documentary, as reported by TopMob News based on documents they obtained.
In the lawsuit filed on February 12th, Combs, who is demanding $100 million, alleged NBCUniversal of defaming him. He contended that the company irresponsibly and carelessly aired a documentary containing allegations of heinous crimes such as sexual assault of minors and serial murder, without any substantial proof whatsoever.
The document additionally argued that the assertions in the documentary had a detrimental impact on the thoughts of most people living in the Southern District of New York, who could be eligible for jury duty and possibly serve as jurors in Mr. Combs’s trial, tainting their minds.
TopMob News had reached out to NBC and Peacock for comment on the lawsuit but has not heard back.
Read on for a breakdown of Combs’ lengthy legal battle.
Federal agents working for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) carried out searches at the Los Angeles and Miami residences of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs on March 25, according to several authorities who spoke with NBC News. The warrant was issued by the Southern District of New York, and an HSI New York spokesperson confirmed to TopMob News that they were executing legal actions as part of an ongoing investigation, with assistance from HSI offices in Los Angeles, Miami, and local law enforcement agencies. At the time of the searches, Combs was reportedly in the Miami area.
News regarding an ongoing investigation surfaced following accusations of sexual misconduct against Combs, which were made in lawsuits filed by several individuals starting in November. However, the musician has refuted these allegations, stating on Instagram that he did not commit any of the acts being accused and will vigorously defend his name, family, and the truth. In a December statement, he described the accusers as seeking a quick payday.
In my perspective as a lifestyle expert, following the searches carried out at Sean Combs’ residences in Los Angeles and Miami by HSI, I, Aaron Dyer, his attorney, made it clear in a statement to TopMob News on March 26th that there was an unnecessary display of military-grade force during these searches. There is no justification for the excessive use of force and the hostile behavior exhibited by the authorities towards Mr. Combs’ children and employees.
I want to clarify that while Mr. Combs was questioned, he was never detained and willingly cooperated with the authorities. Contrary to media reports, neither Mr. Combs nor any of his family members have been arrested or had their travel restricted in any way.
The unexpected raid, combined with a well-orchestrated media presence, has led to an unfounded rush to judgment against Mr. Combs, which I believe is nothing more than a witch hunt based on unsubstantiated claims made in civil lawsuits.
In a statement, Dyer conveyed that Combs intends to vigorously defend himself against all accusations levied against him. He further stated, “There has been no verdict or ruling of wrongdoing in connection with these allegations. Mr. Combs maintains his innocence and will relentlessly work each day to establish his innocence.
During the searches, it was reported by multiple law enforcement sources who have knowledge of the warrant, that authorities from the Department of Homeland Security confiscated phones from Combs’ Miami residence prior to his planned trip to the Bahamas. Furthermore, additional sources familiar with the situation indicated that firearms were found during the search.
A source with knowledge of the situation has revealed to NBC News that four individuals – three women and one man – were questioned by prosecutors and investigators from the Southern District of New York regarding accusations of human trafficking, sexual misconduct, and illegally dealing in narcotics and firearms, which are said to be connected to Combs.
On the same day that search warrants were carried out at Combs’ properties in Miami and Los Angeles, one of his associates named Brendan Paul was apprehended by the Miami-Dade police on drug possession charges. This information was shared with NBC News by a source familiar with the case within law enforcement. According to the arrest affidavit from Miami-Dade, Paul was taken into custody for allegedly holding suspected cocaine and marijuana candies. Prison records indicate that he was released on March 26 following his bond payment. In response to NBC News’ inquiry, Paul’s attorney Brian Bieber stated, “We do not intend to try this case in the media; all issues will be addressed in court.” In May, Paul agreed to a plea deal, as confirmed by Bieber to People magazine, stating, “Brendan accepted the prosecutor’s offer to enter into a diversion program. Upon completion of the program, the entire case against him will be dismissed.
On September 16, 2024, I found myself in handcuffs within the lobby of a New York hotel, as per NBC News reports. The specific charges against me remain uncertain, and it’s yet to be determined whether this arrest is linked to any recent raids that have taken place.
In a statement to TopMob News, lawyer Marc Agnifilo expressed disappointment over the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s choice to pursue what they consider an unfair prosecution of Mr. Combs. They stated that despite being imperfect, he is not a criminal. To show his willingness to cooperate, Mr. Combs voluntarily moved to New York last week in expectation of these charges.
Following Combs’ arrest due to the previously sealed indictment on September 17, the charges against him were made public.
NBC News obtained court documents detailing that the 54-year-old was accused of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking through force, fraud, or coercion, and transportation for prostitution.
The indictment alleged that Combs had been abusing, threatening, and coercing people to fulfill his sexual desires, protect his reputation, and hide his actions for over a decade. The prosecutors claimed this behavior began around 2008.
In the documents, it was stated that “Combs utilized the employees, resources, and influence of the extensive business empire he led and controlled to create a criminal enterprise.” Members and associates of this enterprise allegedly participated in various crimes such as sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and obstruction of justice.
Based on NBC News reports, Marc Agnifilo, Combs’ lawyer, declared that he will contest the charges with utmost determination and confidence in his legal team before the hearing. However, the court denied him bail.
After his apprehension, Combs was detained at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center and refused bail amounting to $50 million. This influential figure in the music industry was also put under suicide precautions, a standard practice for well-known prisoners, according to TopMob News sources. However, he has since been removed from this watch.
According to a source who spoke to NBC News, he was given the same section of the prison as Sam Bankman-Fried, known for his involvement in cryptocurrency fraud.
34-year-old comedian Jeff Wittek admitted on September 29 that he had been to one of Diddy’s wild parties, known as “freak off” events, which took place at a mansion in Miami around the year 2010.
On Jeff FM, Wittek remarked that it towered over eight floors, and as you ascended, the oddities became increasingly bizarre.
He went on to describe what he witnessed that night as an explicit sexual act occurring live. It was the first time he had ever seen such a thing in his lifetime. As for him, he didn’t participate in it, but he did get extremely intoxicated instead.
As Wittek put it, “It’s just crazy. I was literally there. I lived through it.”
At a news conference held on October 1st, lawyer Tony Buzbee disclosed that 120 individuals have made fresh accusations of sexual assault against the rapper.
The accusations made against Combs, as highlighted by Buzbee during a press conference with NBC News, encompass charges such as:
1. Committing a violent sexual assault or rape.
2. Encouraging and facilitating sexual acts involving controlled substances.
3. Sharing video recordings of a sexual nature.
4. Abusing minors sexually.
In response to the accusations, a legal representative for artist Erica Wolff stated that Sean Combs continues to assert his innocence.
She stated, “He isn’t able to respond to every groundless accusation in what has evolved into an irresponsible media spectacle.” However, it is important to note that Mr. Combs strongly and unreservedly denies any claim suggesting he sexually abused anyone, especially minors, as such claims are false and defamatory.
During a press conference on October 1st, as reported by NBC News, Tony Buzbee, the legal representative, stated that one of the 120 individuals accusing Combs claimed to have been only 9 years old at the time they alleged they were assaulted.
According to the attorney, “25 of the accusers were minors at the time of the alleged incidents.”
In a statement given to The Hollywood Reporter on Oct. 6, Natlie G. Figgers, representing Janice, expressed that it’s deeply saddening to watch her son being judged based on falsehoods rather than the truth. She described the situation as a harrowing public trial before he gets a chance to clear his name. The distress she feels at witnessing this injustice is indescribable. Just like every person, her son deserves his day in court where he can express his version of events and demonstrate his innocence.
The legal representative for Beyoncé and Jay-Z made a statement in response to comments made by Jaguar Wright on Piers Morgan’s talk show, where she suggested that the power couple has a greater number of “victims” than Diddy (Sean Combs).
Lawyer Alex Spiro made it clear to TMZ on Oct. 9 that the allegations in question are not just rumors or nonsense, but rather a serious and specific accusation.
In simpler terms, Piers was asked by their lawyer to take down the untrue claim he had made, which he subsequently did and offered an apology.
In his October 8th broadcast, Piers stated that at the time, they weren’t available to counter or refute the allegations. However, things have changed – their legal representative has reached out to express that these accusations are entirely unfounded and lack any factual basis.
