Dina’s Major Role Upgrade in The Last of Us Season 2 Shakes Things Up

Translating video games into live-action is often quite challenging due to the abundance of projects like Borderlands compared to those like Sonic the Hedgehog 3. However, one title stood out as perfect for a live-action movie or series from the moment it was released: The Last of Us. This post-apocalyptic story revolving around a man protecting a young girl from numerous dangers resonated strongly with players. Naughty Dog’s game struck all the right chords, making it such a success that HBO opted to attempt adapting it into a live-action TV show.

In the first instance, everything ran smoothly, but the true test arrived when shaping the second installment, “The Last of Us: Part II”. Now, three episodes into Season 2, it’s evident that HBO has a knack for storytelling, as one character who was least developed in “Part II” plays a pivotal role that promises to create a strong foundation for future events.

HBO’s The Last of Us Is Making Sure That Dina Isn’t an Afterthought

In Episode 1, it’s clear that Dina has a deep bond with Joel, as they openly discuss his emotions towards Ellie. However, the narrative takes a dramatic shift in Episode 2, titled “Through the Valley.” Played by actress Isabella Merced (known for roles in Alien: Romulus and Superman), Dina joins Joel on patrol and encounters Abby. Despite initial reservations, Joel agrees to meet with Abby’s group to gather reinforcements for Jackson Hole’s battle against the infected. This is where Tommy is introduced, who unfortunately suffers at the hands of Abby’s crew. Compared to Tommy, Dina escapes relatively unscathed, but she’s deeply affected nonetheless when she discovers what has happened to Joel.

In Episode 3, “The Path,” the circumstances of “Through the Valley” lead Dina to devise a meticulously planned journey towards Seattle in the series, as she is aware that Abby’s militia group, the Washington Liberation Front (W.L.F.), resides there. For several months, she conceals critical information from Ellie to ensure her friend recovers and is prepared to depart Jackson Hole at the opportune moment. This contrasts significantly with the game, where Dina simply accompanies Ellie due to her reluctance to let her travel alone across the country. The series’ focus on Dina as an active participant in the storyline is proving beneficial and seems unlikely to shift as the season progresses.

Dina Has as Much At Stake as Ellie in The Last of Us Season 2

In the final few minutes of “The Path”, Dina and Ellie reach Seattle only to encounter a shocking scene – a road filled with lifeless bodies. Suspecting Abby and the WLF, they become more determined in their pursuit. The grim discovery underscores the formidable nature of the group they are chasing. Yet, instead of hesitating, Dina and Ellie press forward, driven by their intense emotions. Their resolve appears unshakable because their desire is to find and punish those who took Joel away from them – a man they both deeply cared for.

In Dina’s new position (and Merced’s captivating portrayal), numerous intriguing opportunities arise for the “The Last of Us” TV series. One such possibility is exploring Dina’s quest for retribution. Struggling with frostbite when she encountered Abby and her group, she was unable to defend herself. Once her strength returns and she gains a companion, she might pursue Manny, who threatened her, or Mel, who drugged her, giving them a taste of their own medicine. This narrative direction would enrich the original game’s story about Ellie’s vengeance by introducing an additional layer that was previously unexplored.
