The writer-director Fede Álvarez has confirmed that the follow-up to Alien: Romulus 2 is currently under development. Excitement for a sequel started brewing when Romulus surpassed expectations at the box office last summer, and now Álvarez has officially announced that production is underway. During a screening and Q&A session hosted by Collider over the weekend, Álvarez shared updates on the project, stating that he is currently writing it. He expressed strong interest in working on the sequel, hinting at a potential start date for filming in 2025.
For the past couple of months, Álvarez has been focusing on enjoying the success of the movie rather than dwelling on other thoughts. Now that the film is receiving recognition during awards season, he’s been preoccupying himself with this positive development. This was shared during a panel discussion featuring VFX artists Eric Barbra and Dan Macarin, who played crucial roles in securing the Oscar nomination for Romulus in the visual effects category.
At one point, he mentioned that the sequel would be his next film. Later, when asked about the potential start date of production, he included Barbra and Macarin in the discussion. He replied, “That’s a good question. I really hope to start filming it this year.” Turning to the visual effects team, he added, “If any of you are free, I could use your help.
Alvarez has consistently expressed enthusiasm for the prospect of working on another ‘Alien’ film, despite the rocky path of ‘Romulus’. The movie was not highly anticipated and received little attention during Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Studios. Initially, it seemed destined for a streaming release on Hulu, but its theatrical debut surpassed all expectations. During this time, Alvarez mentioned to journalists that he would be open to a sequel, spinoff, or even revisiting the ‘Alien vs. Predator’ series.
Regarding the studio, Steve Asbell from 20th Century stated to The Hollywood Reporter back in October that they were considering a sequel, but there was no agreement with Álvarez then. However, it appears that situation has shifted – Álvarez might have meant he was “working on it” during the development phase, but given his reference to filming so imminently, he was likely discussing pre-production instead.
What Will the Romulus Sequel Be About?
Regarding the content of his latest tale, Álvarez appeared quite enthusiastic yet didn’t reveal anything significant. He showed interest in delving deeper into the intricate details of the series, stating that “Alien is multifaceted. Alien is Alien, it’s Prometheus, and everything in between. It’s a vast universe. I think now I would relish exploring, and the intention is to venture into entirely unexplored territories within this franchise.
Right now, you can catch the movie “Romulus,” an alien film, on Hulu. On Sunday, March 2nd, at 7 p.m. Eastern Time, tune in to ABC for the live broadcast of the 2025 Academy Awards.
